Photoshop 21.1.2: Can't open PSD or PNG files

I created a PSD file in January 2020, and suddenly can no longer open some PSD or PNG files. I get a bunch of errors: 'its not a PNG file' or 'its not a valid Photoshop file'. Thinking they must be corrupt somehow.

However, these files open perfectly on PS 2018. Once I open these files in the older version of PS, they then open fine in the latest PS 2020 (version 21.1.1).

I originally posted about this in the Adobe Community Forum here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/can-t-open-psd-or-png-files-in-ps-2020/m-p/11055432?page=1#...

After chatting with some members, and trying all their suggestions, I contacted Adobe Support who confirmed the following:

"The files aren't corrupt as they are working fine in an older version of the application. This is a compatibility issue."

They advised I should continue to open the file in PS 2018 to then use them in PS 2020.

I'm using:

  • Mac OS: Catalina 10.15.4
  • PS 2020: 21.1.2 (Creative Cloud) – and now also PS 2018 ;)

Can you post files you're having trouble with?

I suspect the problem is the files actually have the wrong extension. See: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/error-invalid-jpeg-marker-displays.html

I believe someone from the other forum already tried that theory?

Files are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/46dfiuhf8z...

These are both legit files and have the correct extension from what I can tell. Did any of the other troubleshooting help?

On the computer where it's not working correctly, what does the Open With field have in it in the File Info dialog in macOS?
