Photoshop 2021: Panning and zooming are REALLY slow with update

I've 'purged all', optimized all the performance settings, freed up lots of space on my SSD and still PS is dragging and sputtering.  I use a track pad and a mouse with wheel and the option key for zooming and I get blank-out's and frozen pixilation and crunchy artifacts that go away temporarily when I close and re-open an image.

All the Activity Monitor tabs show easy workloads EXCEPT the drive which has twice the headroom as before when all worked smoothly.

What am I missing?

Same here dude. Macbook Pro 2016 and no joy with the new photoshop. I've purged and reset all preferences but I still get poor performance when using Zoom and pen tool.

I keep seeing this reply from the Adobe Admin. Are you saying that CC2021 doesn't work with 3rd Party Plugins? Is the only way of getting CC2021 to work properly to remove all 3rd party plugins that CC2020 worked quite happily with - because if that is the case then that is a pretty shoddy state of affairs!

I have myself posted a fault with CC2021 suddenly not Scrubby Zooming along with all the other features that utilise the GPU - even though Preferences-Performance shows that sniffer.exe is still reporting my video card correctly. No reply received !!!

hi, my photoshop just started lagging a lot when I try zooming in and out of a canevas. 

It started doing so about 3 days ago, I did not change anything in my preferences, I use the same pretty new MacBook that I have been using for the past year. 

I tried playing with the performances preferences, but no change. It's pretty upsetting considering the fact that I need Photoshop in my every day life for school and work. I do not use any plug-ins.

everything else works just fine, but it's pretty infuriating that it takes me 1/4 more time to do my work just because zooming is not working smoothly and quickly.

Sadly, the best solution I've found is to use a previous version of Photoshop.

I've gone back to PS 2019 (v10.0.10).

Meanwhile, I'm still paying monthly . . .

@Nick Skerten I know this is a late answer, but I think that Jeffrey receives crash reports, and lots of feedback, and tries to pinpoint the issue, hence a basic troubleshooting step. Please do not misread more into that.

No plug-ins, BUT p shop seems to have healed itself to pre-update speeds.  Are there under-the-radar fixes being sent?

Ok, so reloading to 22.2 works.  I got on the phone with Adobe and by renaming brushes.psp and Actions Palette.psp to old it forces to create new ones, without any brushes or actions loaded.  That messes up a lot, but it solves the sticky pinch zoom.

Are affected users showing the rulers? I remember similar issues from the past, it might be worth exploring this troubleshooting path as well. (And please remember to report any particular thing that might make your system different)

Hi Pierre,

Not showing the rulers here, nor the grids or "repères" (sorry I do not know the term in English).

The first time my Photoshop started doing that, I used the ruler tool under the eyedropper tool to straighten out an image, has there been issues related to that in the past for you or other users you know?

Update:  The problem is gone, everything's working fine now.  Not sure when it improved, I've been relatively idle over the winter.  I should pay better attension.....

Just updated my Photoshop 2021 (v22.3.0) and tested for differences regarding this performance issue.

For me, the same problem persists. Everything is not fine.

All the information I posted in another related thread (which should be merged with this one) is apparently all still relevant.

Same problem here. When zooming on my 2019 MacBook Pro by pinching the trackpad, the zoom continues long after I've finished the gesture on the pad. It's not useable as is. Very annoying.

same here, im using a 2016 mbp 13 inch i5 8gb ram 4thunderbolt ports, the more confusing part is that when i drag the photoshop window to my second 1080p monitor, the problem is gone, but on macbook's display is so laggy.

I think this is related with a problem that ps have with hidpi screens, i installed switchresx and switched the resolution of the retina screen to 1650x900(the not hidpi resolution) then started to work as fine as my external 1080p monitor

Im using the latest 16 inch MacBook pro with 16 ram and i9 processor... I dont understand where the problem is coming from... Should I reinstall to previous version or wait for an update ? Its so annoying I can't do anything... even the slightest zoom in/out or even pan motion is lagging... Funny thing is all the the other features are working smoothly...

Same situation here, I have:

MacBook Pro 2019 16' (6-core i7)

16gbRam

AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4GB

Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

Catalina 10.15.7

I have both Versions on PS working on that exact same computer:

Photoshop 2021 22.3.0 => DOES NOT Zoom or Pan in a real-time responsive manner, it lags terribly, and everything happens as if it was buffering and 'replaying' every movement. Very hard to work this way. 

Photoshop 2020 21.2.6 => WORKS just fine. No issues on anything.

Clearly there is something that the newer version introduced that is not playing well with either hardware acceleration or maybe it's assuming a different core (M1 vs Intel) but it is very drastic. I am surprised this not being a "known issue" by now.

I have downgraded back to 22.2 and it works fine. Still though, this is just unacceptable for such software. Seriously, if I didn't have to pay cancellation fee for subscription, I'm out..

Same problem I've had. Extremely annoying, and extremely bad for how fast I can move around my working area. I've resorted to not using the trackpad to zoom in and out at all, but to use the zoom tool. I really wish Adobe could fix what seems to be such a persistent and common issue
