Photoshop 2020: Crashes every time I try to open

My program crashes every time I try to open photoshop. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted my computer several times. What should I do?

If you start with the shift key to disable 3rd party plug-ins does it launch?

Same issue here. Not even a splash screen. Just an 'unexpectedly quit' message from MacOS.

No 3rd party plug-ins installed in this version, and the shift key suggestion does not help. Restarting the Mac hasn't helped. Reinstalling Photoshop several times hasn't helped. Nor has removing preferences.

I am on an old Mac Pro, so there are one or two idiosyncratic things about my system. But I am running Mojave and everything else is running beautifully, including the previous version of Photoshop.

My video card is a 'flashed' NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 4 GB. Could this be a problem?

I have the same issue on a MacPro 3,1 with Catalina 10.15.7 installed. Here is the crash log :

OS Version:            Mac OS X 10.15.7 (19H2)

Version 2020 was working perfectly. Video Card is Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 2Go

It looks like a OpenCV problem ???????

I may be on the wrong forum 2021 is crashing and not 2020 who works perfectly

My apologies. I've added to the wrong thread myself. Like HenriSZwarc, I mean Photoshop 2021. Also like him, I'm running a Mac 3,1, though in my case using Mojave. My video card is also Nvidia, a GeForce 770 GTX 770, with 4 GB.

And yes, I noticed the same thing: an OpenCV problem notified in the crash report. Exactly the same.

Please post a copy of the log from photoshop > help > system info. Copy/paste the entire text from that window into a comment here or attach as a .txt file.

Hi, Sympa. I can't actually launch Photoshop 2021, so this is not possible. Crash log is more than 30,000 characters. Can't see how to attach a .txt file. Can I post part of the crash log?

Forum tooling could be improved in this regard. Can host the crashlog somewhere? (google drive, drop box etc)

I've the exact same problem on my Mac Pro5.3 Catalina 10.15.4 with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB . Only Photoshop 2021 crashes immediately at startup.

Here's the link of my crash report :

Internal engineers have looked into the crash log. We can see that your system is crashing because the CPU does not support SSE 4.2. In order for Photoshop to keep developing new features, our system requirements have to be updated periodically. Your system is no longer within the support range (it is likely 8-12 years old).

For more information, you can refer to the minimum system requirements here

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html#MinimumandrecommendedsystemrequirementsforPhotoshop

To move forward you have two options.

1. You can upgrade your hardware if you want to take advantage of the latest features within photoshop.

2. You can use your same hardware - but will need to revert to an older version of photoshop. Steps here https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

Thanks, Sympa. Sad, but looks as though the writing's on the wall for the old beast. Yes, more than 12 years old. It has served me well. Still serves me well. But I understand the nexus between advances in hardware and shiny new software.

Thank you Sympa, it’s sad because this machine, Mac Pro, works still so good. But I get it.

The fix for MACOS can be downloaded from here:

https://www.sendspace.com/file/meab5g

Unzip the file and copy the resulting libopencv_world.4.4.0.dylib file to replace the same file in the Photoshop 2021 installation directory (/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2021/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2021.app/Contents/Frameworks/libopencv_world.4.4.0.dylib).

This fixes the problem an PS runs just fine.
But disclaimer as usual - all this at your own risk.

OpenCV library was taken from official release of OpenCV 4.4.0 on GitHUB (https://github.com/opencv/opencv)

Additionally, you also need libopenjp2.7.dylib to be installed in /usr/local/opt/openjpeg/lib/ folder
the file can be downloaded from here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/p2i2le

Once you download the file and unzip it, you do the following steps in Terminal:
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/opt/openjpeg/lib/
mv libopenjp2.7.dylib /usr/local/opt/openjpeg/lib/

Enjoy

Hallo,

Please use the new file downloadable from: https://www.sendspace.com/file/jwxnni

Unzip the file and copy all resulting files to PS2021 install directory (/Applications/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2021/Adobe\ Photoshop\ 2021.app/Contents/Frameworks/)

Hope it works now

Thanks, dghazfan. That last link isn't working. A problem with establishing a secure connection, apparently.

Scrap that. Safari baulked, but Firefox happy.

Not sure I feel safe installing them, though. Dylibs, from a quick search, have the potential to ‘perform a wide range of malicious and subversive actions, including stealthy persistence, load-time process injection, security software circumvention, and a Gatekeeper bypass (affording opportunities for remote infection)’. https://www.virusbulletin.com/virusbulletin/2015/03/dylib-hijacking-os-x And you're an unknown person who has only just signed up to these forums. I have to be wary.

Your option is to download, compile and install opencv v4.4.0 yourself

It is quite simple, actually

just follow the guides - they are freely available if you google it

Would this produce the four dylib files that you have helpfully packaged together?

yes, and many more -- the whole opencv package

Bingo! Photoshop 2021 running on Mac Pro 3,1. Thank you!

Now, will the neural filters work? So far just saying, ‘Loading…’.

Hmm. And then crashing. :\

No Bingo here yet on my MacPro 3,1. Photoshop 2021 still not running and crashing after I put the 4 dylib in the Frameworsks.  The error log here included asked for a dylib which is duly there !!!!!!!! What I have done wrong ???????

14 Messages

 •

I am wondering why this specific dylib doesn't load properly.

Hi dghazfan, thank you for this, but it did not work. What I did was downloaded the last PS2021 folder with the 4 .dylib files in it. Copied those to /Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2021/Adobe Photoshop 2021.app/Contents/Frameworks/

I then created manually (not in Terminal) the new directory /usr/local/opt/openjpeg/lib/ and copied the libopenjp2.7.dylib file to it. After that started PS2021, but crashes immediately. Did I something wrong? What I do manually with the new directory is in my opinion the same as with the Terminal command, isn't it?

Hi dghazfan and warnerraven : I have tested the opening of Photoshop 2021 with the same directory in /usr/local/...........or without it but same crashing with then same error log I included in my last post : one of the 4 dylib included in the frameworks is not properly loading in the starting process of Photoshop and I don't understand why.

@Hugh Todd You did manage to let Photoshop 2021 start up and load the application? With the exception of loading the Neural filters, because that causes a crash. What did you do with the dylib files what let PS2021 start?

Because what I do, It does not seems to work. Maybe I see/read something the wrong way.

Every time I'll get this error (part of crash report):

Dyld Error Message:
  Library not loaded: */libopenjp2.7.dylib
  Referenced from: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2021/Adobe Photoshop 2021.app/Contents/Frameworks/libopencv_world.4.4.0.dylib
  Reason: image not found

There is for some reason an original dylib file of this and an alias within the Framworks folder.

I have the exact same problem with the same dylib not loads and the same error log...........and I have the same original dylib  + an alias of it. We are on the same boat !!!!!!!!!

I managed to install Photoshop 2021 but I got the same problem than Hugh Todd : I tried to test the Neural Filters and it is crashing the app with this error log : Many thanks in advance for your help in resolving that !!!!!

@HenriSzwarc could you please lay out what steps you take to achive a startup of PS2021? I have tried it a couple of times without succes.

CC cleaning is unnecessary but installing Homebrew seems a must. Only problem : starting the neural filters provoke a crash not resolved yet...........

Sorry for the delay. I’m in Australia, so timezone issues.

I followed dghazfan’s instructions with his most recent set of download files. There were four dylib files in the ZIP file, and I installed them as he instructed.

He asked for a crash log file, and I posted it. It may be that our old Xeon chips  have defeated us all, because he has not so far replied. Still, I’m very grateful that he looked into it and tried to help.

Hallo Hugh (and all),

i am currently trying out several opencv cmake configuration and testing which one that’ll provide us with the most compatible version for ps2021. Sorry for the delay

@HenriSzwarc Thank you for that, I will test it soon. Do not have the time immediately.

@Hugh Todd Thank you for you're reply. I did that either, but for me it didn't work. I thought maybe I did something wrong. But I wil try another workaround as in the post of Macrumors what HenriSzwarc suggested.

Has anybody succeeded installing a working PS2021 on a Mac Pro 3,1 or newer?

I have successfully start up PS2021, it works great, but when I use Neural Filters it keeps loading and have to force quit PS and when I am using  Type and then selecting another font, PS crashes. That for now, I will try updating to or installing version 22.0.1 later on.

@warnerraven

For installing 22.0.1 you have to apply the same "trick" than for the older one. Neural Filters are crashing even on a newer one and I tested them. They are mostly in beta format and they don't work completely and accurately so don't worry, crashes are "normal" !!!!!!!!!

Yes that’s right Neural Filters crashed also on a my newer MacBook Pro. But on my old Mac Pro it doesn’t load. Does it with this update of PS 22.01(And with te trick off course)? If so I will try it.
