Photoshop 2019: Scratch disk full causes crashes

Scratch disk full errors frequently happening when saving documents, trying to open from RAW and during random edits causing the program to shut down. The scratch disks have over 500 gigs available space. This is not a problem when I run PS 2018.

If you have only one hard drive in your computer, you will need to find files to delete or move to another drive to make space. Otherwise, you can mount another drive, and specify the preferences to use it. Go to Preferences > Scratch Disks... and set the newly mounted drive as your primary scratch disk.

If Photoshop cannot launch because the currently selected scratch disk is full, hold down the Cmd + Option keys (Mac) or Ctrl + Alt keys (Windows) during launch to set a new scratch disk.

Jeffrey,

I can access the screen to change the scratch disks yet, changing the preferred scratch disk does not work, and Photoshop crashes. I cannot even open the app without it giving me the message, "Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full."

Do you have Photoshop 21.0.2 installed?

Howdy Bernie,

How big are the documents that you currently have open?  What other apps do you have running?  Are they also working with large documents?

Thanks,
David

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help > System Info... and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Jeffrey - Marqwan asked you to show us how to clear our scratch disks and you didn't answer that question.  I would like to know how to do that. Thank you.

Hi Emily,

Your scratch drive is the hard drive you're using for space, set as Jeff indicated.  The way you clear your scratch drive is the same way you clear any junk from your hard drive -- delete old stuff to make room.

Thanks,
David
