Photoshop 2019: Problems with Smart Objects and gradient fills

• Applying a Shadow / Highlight adjustment to a Smart Object results in some pretty bad banding / posterization.
• Creating a Gradient Fill layer and then making this layer into a Smart Object will remove the gradient in PS 2019. It does not behave this way in PS 2018.

Go to Preferences > Performance... and check Legacy Blending. Restart Photoshop. Does it render correctly?

Thank you, Jeffrey. In the instance of the Gradient Fill to Smart Object conversion, using the Legacy Compositing does resolve this issue. Also, opening and saving this Smart Object fixes the gradient rendering, as photoshopguru_GER describes.

I can't seem to replicate the banding issue here at home - I will try with the original image at work tomorrow and report back.

Is there any information available on the new compositing engine? I would like to learn more about it and what else I should keep an eye on. We've got some early adopters on our team.

I can confirm the second one. You have to open the smart object and save it to fix this.

Thank you. This is a good workaround. Also, using Legacy Compositing in the Performance Preferences fixes the issue.
