Photoshop 2019: Masking not working

Masking not working in either smart object or regular layers.  When I make a selection to Mask -- Usually I find a definitive black mask in the mask box. This is not happening since the update.  If I ALT click on the mask I see a good rendition of the mask.  However the mask is not working.  I have re-down loaded PS 2019.  Made sure all updates on graphic drivers and windows 10 are up to date. I made sure the legacy area of the property box is not checked. (When I deactivated my graphics care Adobe bridge quit working.) I took a refresher course in Masking and found no technique errors on my part.  (I have been using PS since PS 3)  I am nervous about re-downloading PS 2018 (will I need to down load 2018 bridge and 2018 raw also???  

Thank you for listening, I have a Project deadline and I am in personal panic mode.  Gary

Do you have a file you could post where the mask is not rendering correctly? There is a known issue where Smart Filter masks aren't rendering correctly.

The workaround is to go to Preferences > Performance... and check "Legacy Compositing" and restart Photoshop. Does that make things behave correctly?

Thanks for your rapid reply. The problem is happening in both smart filter and regular.  I tried the Legacy compositing yesterday without any success.  At this point because of time restraints -  I moved back to 2018 until problems iron out in PS 2019.  I am back up. Like I stated before I have been with Adobe PS since 1995-6, I am not leaving, Just got frustrated.  Gary
