Pasted layers move

When I copy and paste a layer into the same document, it moves slightly. I need the pasted lyer to be exactly on top of the base layer.

I have the had the issue too. Even setting up guides and moving the new layer about takes some time. Try [Layer] [Duplicate Layer]. That should do the trick and you can even move the layer somewhere else. Good Luck!

Have you tried Layer-Duplicate and then re positioned the result in the stack of layers?  Could be you Copy and Paste by Selection? A manual Copy and Paste would be difficult to do without some tiny "human hand" error.

I mis-stated. I use Duplicate layer, not copy/paste. Sorry

you're doing something wrong if duplicate is changing position.
Next time it happens take screenshots of your workspace and describe what you were doing when it happened.

Photoshop now has a paste in place command. That should do it.

Thanks. I'll try it. But why the movement when I Duplicate?  Also, Duplicate is faster than selecting, copying and pasting.

Thats puzzling me. I don't think I have had that issue. Not sure if there is a preference that could effect this...hmmm. What happens when you drag the layer to the add layer icon at the base of the layer panel? Does it still shift? Maybe try deselecting so you know a selection has nothing to do with it.

Dragging the layer to new layer icon seems OK, but the movement happens intermittently anyway.

Ya me either. I usually just pasted back within an active selection. I didn't know about photoshops paste in place until now. Thanks for the question Dave. Ya learn something new everyday!

Happens to me seemingly randomly all the time.  I make the new layer about 50% transparent, move it pretty close and zoom in for pixels about 1/2 cm wide, hide the layer, make it show, move it a little, repeat, until toggling shows it exactly in place.  It always happens if I do select color range on a layer, alter the range, copy and paste.  Rarely if selecting from the bottom layer.

use difference blend mode to align layers...

I do that one too. . . .where there is a will there is a way, it can be done!

I gotta trick for you to check to see if layers line up. Set the top layer to difference. When they are exactly aligned everything will be black. You can usually get pixel to pixel this way.

But we need more info to find out why it moves on your machine.

Again, I have to apologize for my confusion. I use Duplicate and copy/paste. The move happens with copy paste. I make a marquee selection, copy and paste. The pasted selection has moved.
(I can't attach a screen shot for some reason.)

OK, well the solution for that issue was explained already... paste in place.

yes, but that's not an explaination.

what explanation? Normal Paste is not Paste in Place, which is why they added Paste in Place. Sometimes when pasting, you don't want it to be in Place which is why there's normal Paste.
