Opening Screen List of Recently Opened Files
The most recent Photoshop update got rid of an opening screen that I had found quite useful. That screen was the one with the list of recently opened files and showed a thumbnail for each file. Now, that's been replaced by a wizard-type screen that walks you through the process of opening a file. I don't need that level of handholding. I miss the old screen with the list of thumbnails and other useful options (opening various document types & sizes).

I'm not sure what you mean by not having the "wizard." If you mean the Learn section, that shows up on a fresh install, fresh preferences. At least on my computers, it doesn't hang around after I switch to the Recent Files view. I can get access by putting "Learn" in the Search field.
When did the Start Screen quit working? When you updated, or later sometime? What do you open to when you launch PS. Just a blank screen? Or if you open to the main workspace, have you checked to make sure in Preferences> General you have enabled Show Start Screen? It's possible that the install or your preferences have become corrupted if you're getting nothing at all or it's randomly disappearing.

I didn't really notice until today, so could have been in the past few days, or maybe a couple weeks ago when I updated Photoshop. But, I did not change preferences. When I launch Photoshop manually- not by opening say a file- I get normal palettes & tools, but a blank black workspace.
Just checked preferences- Show "start" workspace box is checked- tried unchecking relaunching, , no change. Rechecked, relaunched, no change.
Maybe a system reboot will solve it...
