Downscale images or background and I lose resolution - help!!

Question

I've created a seamless background pattern in Photoshop.  When I apply the background to a canvas and downscale it or zoom it down, I lose resolution of the images in the pattern.  I've tried converting it to a smart object - still the same, I've tried the edit image and bicubic shapener (reduction) option - still the same.  I'm tearing my hair out.  I can't work out how to reduce the size without losing resolution.

When you downscale, that's an expected result for a detailed pattern. There are fewer pixels available to create the image so you may not be able to do what you want. Try simplifying your pattern so it has less detail.

Are you talking about detail or sharpness or mismatched patterns? You could come at it a couple ways, but no matter what you do, if you scale down, you lose resolution.

1. If it is for print, you can increase the dpi/ppi of the file so that you have a denser number of pixels per inch.
2. If you scale in percentages divisible by 2 or 4 you might get sliiiightly sharper results since it will not be splitting pixels in the middle.
3. You can try making your pattern into a literal Pattern and apply that and see what happens:
