Downscale images or background and I lose resolution - help!!
I've created a seamless background pattern in Photoshop. When I apply the background to a canvas and downscale it or zoom it down, I lose resolution of the images in the pattern. I've tried converting it to a smart object - still the same, I've tried the edit image and bicubic shapener (reduction) option - still the same. I'm tearing my hair out. I can't work out how to reduce the size without losing resolution.

1. If it is for print, you can increase the dpi/ppi of the file so that you have a denser number of pixels per inch.
2. If you scale in percentages divisible by 2 or 4 you might get sliiiightly sharper results since it will not be splitting pixels in the middle.
3. You can try making your pattern into a literal Pattern and apply that and see what happens:
