Answered

Why aren't document windows floating in Photoshop Elements 9.0.3?

After updating Photoshop Elements to 9.0.3, why do my document windows open as tabbed instead of floating?

While the 9.0.3 update is largely about dealing with some existing issues when using Wacom tablets with Photoshop Elements, a number of other small changes were introduced. Based on the feedback of some customers, the default behavior of opening new documents was changed so that they always open as tabbed, even when floating windows are enabled.

We are not above reverting to the original behavior. Let us know your preferences on the subject.

those updates didn't so crap to work with the Intuos4, that came with Elements 9.

Are you having trouble with the Intuos4 and Photoshop Elements 9? If so, what sort of trouble? The update fixes a very specific issue, what you may be experiencing may have nothing to do with this update. Please provide more details.

On a personal note: I love tabbed documents, in the same way that I love maximized applications. The concept may be a little alien to Mac users, but with Windows, a maximized application window is fixed, it doesn't move, plus it uses up the all of the available screen real estate, leaving no negative space. The same is true of tabbed document windows in Photoshop Elements. Although I did not make this decision, it is one that aligns with my own workflow.

The point is, different people will have different preferences. There should be an option for people who like tabs, and they should get new docs opening as tabs. But there clearly also needs to be an option for people who want new windows, and once set as the default behaviour it should stay that way.

Adobe seems to think that they've provided this option by releasing PSE 10. Apparently, "reverting" in the above statement, "We are not above reverting to the original behavior" is defined as "you pay for a new version, and we'll 'revert.'"

Just put the preferences in the next version of photoshop elements. The same two preferences that photoshop cs5 has for dealing with floating/tabbed documents.

Problem solved.

If adobe didn't try to make photoshop elements "dumbed" down in certain areas such as this one, adobe wouldn't have near the complaints.

I either want floatng documents or i don't. I'm sure i can't repeat the words people use when they are working with floating documents and one wrong move of the document makes it tabbed @#$$%%%%^ .

Please give us the choice of either floating or tabbed.

Dan ... Its already sorted in PSE10

... and give Adobe a break if they didn't dumb down Elements then no one would buy the full version of Photoshop. :) :) :)

It's never been "sorted". Try working with floating windows. I bet you'll turn those windows to tabs when you least expect it.

Photoshop elements needs to have a choice between using floating windows or tabs, not just opening windows as floating windows (or that preference to allow floating windows full edit), but to allow users to work with real floating windows.

In other words when i work with floating windows, allow me to move them around without fear of tabbing them so easily as the case is now.

All i'm asking is to have a feature work right (as it is implemented in photoshop cs5) It's still not perfect in cs5, but at least it's more like working in legacy versions of photoshop or elements.

On a personal note: I LOATHE tabbed documents. They get in the way of real work, and do nothing to improve the UI.

I love tabs in my web browser and some other apps, but not in PSE because a lot of what I do involves dragging stuff from one image to another. So why not make the default a preference setting? Please?

(Speaking of settings, please fix the bug in the Saving Files preferences - it's not saving the Append File Extension setting.)

The Append File Extension setting bug is something we are aware of and working on.

I prefer floating document windows 99.2% of the time, so the new default of opening in tabs is, in my opinion, sucky.

But I acknowledge that others may feel the opposite, so I wouldn't want to take away THEIR candy, either.

Give me the choice of which behavior I wish to be default.

I agree with Genevieve. I love tabs but not in PSE. I also drag stuff from one image to another and this makes it more difficult to do that

Personally I do not like tabbed documents in this context BUT if we like or dislike them really is totally irrelevant. The real question is:

If you choose to select floating documents do you want them to open floating or tabbed. For me its a no brainer ... I selected floating documents because I wanted them to float Duh !!!

Or is that just to simple ... :) :) :)

The answer really amuses me "default behavior of opening new documents was changed so that they always open as tabbed, even when floating windows are enabled." ... some user (identity unknown but certainly keeping his or her head down) requested this. Umm why didn't they just suggest he/she selected tabbed instead of floating, much simpler and less hassle for the rest of us.

Is the next change going to be Mode RGB opening as Mode Greyscale then you need to change it manually. :)

I feel that such application-wide behaviors should be user selected at the first boot of the software after the installation, and be accessible in the preferences later, or in the welcome screen.

I really would prefer having the option for all files to open as floating or tabs. I much prefer not using the tabbed method and wish I could revert to the old style.

I prefer that there is an option where the user can choose what he/she prefers and not that it already has been decided by PSE!
I want to open the pictures floated and NOT tabbed. But the recent update don't have a choose option and all my files get opened into "one" picture. I need to drag them out all the time which is very annoying!

After using PSE9 for a couple of days, I can't imagine why floating image windows would ever be required.
If one simply wants to compare images, the Display Options can be used to show tabbed images side-by-side, etc.
If one wants to move or copy objects from one image to another, simply use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on the relevant images.
If the old-fashioned method of drag-and-drop is wanted, drag to the image in the Project Bin, or to a tabbed image displayed in a side-by-side view.

Hi Ken ...

The question really isn't between tabbed documents and floating ones ... lets face it some of us like tabbed documents and some of us don't.

The question is ... if you choose floating documents (an option which Adobe provide) do you want them to open floating or tabbed.

To me logic says if you choose the option floating documents then they should open that way and if you choose tabbed documents then they should open tabbed.

I have allways worked with floating images, i just wont do maximzed windows even though i run Windows and not Mac.
I have closed the project window beacuse it takes too much space on a wide screen display.
I'm dissapointed that the tabbed images are default (2 extra clicks is too many)
I'm dissapointed that i allways have to remove a lot of images when trying to print just one (2 clicks too much)
I think i will reistall Photoshop 6

I think users should have the option of how to display their images. How hard can that be? When you make a choice that's how the open you shouldn't have to make any more mouse clicks to get them floating if that's how you wanted them in the first place.

GIVE USERS THE CHOICE, IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD!
