Want to add length to a picture

Have a square .jpg photo with black background; I want to make it longer by adding additional black to the bottom in order to make create a rectangular photo.  Then want to overlay text on the added portion (new layer?).  How?  Thanks - appreciated!

Go to Image menu> resize>canvas size. You can enlarge the canvas to the desired dimension. Click on the anchor point at the top. Choose black for the extension color.

Really is simple when one knows the simple, elementary, basic steps, huh?!  Duh.  Many thanks!

Here's a better way:  Make the rectangle size you want in white, fill it with black-fill.  Now copy your picture into that and position it to the top.  Done deal.

And yet another way - have black as the background color chip in the toolbar.  Use the crop tool set at No Restriction: drag a crop box over the whole image, release but do not commit.  Then drag the bottom handle down as much as you want to add.  Tap the Enter key.
