Useless Tutorials and "Help"

I'm using Photoshop Elements 12 on a Mac (OS X 10.11.6) and it is, of course, completely non-intuitive.  So, I go to the "help" files and video tutorials, which are apparently written for other versions as they immediately say "click the MASK button" here [no MASK button anywhere] and so on.  Elements is supposed to be a 'light' version of Photoshop, but even so it's such a pain in the ass to use, guessing what does what with no help from the "help" files, that I only use it rarely.  Which of course only makes the problem worse.
