Photoshop Elements: Version Set Option Greyed Out

I have installed PSE 10 and converted my catalog from PSE 6 (on Windows 7). Everything seems to be working fine with one exception - the option to "save as version set" is greyed out when I try to edit any of my files that were in the original catalog. For any new files inserted into the catalogue - the option works fine.

I noticed that the old files properties all show "Creator: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0" while the new files are shown "Creator:

Elements Organizer 10.0".

Any help would be appreciated.

In what format are you saving the files?

'Save As Version Set' would be greyed out if you are saving in a format which Organizer does not import (SCT, EPS, RAW, PICT, PCT) or cannot create as part of version set (PSE).

I am trying to save them as jpgs and it is only those files that were in the catalog when I converted from pse6 to pse10 that have the problem.

Hi,

As this problem is only with files from previous catalog and it is working fine for new files, so i guess there is something wrong with your catalog.

Please try to repair and optimize your catalog (in PSE10).
For this go to 'File->catalog'. Slect the catalog and click on 'repair'. A dialog box will pop up saying 'No errors were found in catalog'. Click check on 'Re-index visual similarity data' and press 'Ok' button.
In same catalog manager dialog box select the same catalog and click on 'Optimize' button.

Let me know if you this problem persists.

Did the save as version set option worked fine in PSE6? And what is the location of the files in the converted catalog?Are they on external hard disk or internal hard disk?

The save as version set worked in PSE 6. The the files/pictures are on an internal hard disk - but not the C disk.

I'd suggest following the steps Surendra gave above, about repairing the catalog, in version 6. Then reconvert the catalog and see if that resolves the issue.

That seemed to have solved the problem - Thanks. But now I have another one. I have ended up with 2 catalogs - My Pictures (MP) and My Pictures 1 (MP1) with 2 directories on my HD (My Pictures and My Pictures 1). When I am in Catalog MP1 and open the picture file location it shows My Pictures (not 1). I would like to understand where the pictures really are for the good catalog and get rid of one of the directories to avoid confusion in future. Can you suggest the best way to do this? I would like to get rid of MP 1 if possible and have the catalog and pictures in My Pictures like I originallu had it set up.

Hi,

Catalog is just a database kind of thing which keeps a track of file location and other parameters. It does not store the image.
Previously when you had the problem (version set greyed out option): you converted a catalog (MP) from PSE6 and also imported some images to it (which were not present in PSE6 catalog).
When you converted you catalog (MP1) again (after repairing in PSE6), you didnot imported those images. Consequently you have two different catalogs.
Now as your problem is solved i would recommend to re import those extra images in MP1 catalog (and if you donot need MP catalog you can delete it).

I have done as you suggested and when I deleted the MP catalog (from PSE10) it deleted all my pictures (which were in folder MP - even tho the new PSE catalog files were in MP1). I have backups. So now my new catalog MP1 has no pictures associated with it.

Just to clarify when I converted to the new catalog I ended up with 2 folders (MP and MP1) both of which contained the PSE catalog files and duplicated 17,000 pictures. When I went to catalog MP1 the actual linked pictures were in folder MP (not sure how or why this happened but it did). The 17,000 pictures in MP1 were not linked to either catalog.

I have copied the pictures back into folder MP and they have relinked to catalog MP1 so everything seems OK.

I have a couple of questions -

Are there any problems with having the PSE catalog and the actual pictures in different folders? I assume not.

Why did deleting the catalog in PSE10 result in deletion all of the pictures? Seems scary to me.

Question 1: The default behavior is to have the catalog and the images in very different folders. The catalog should be in a folder shared by all users on the system, while the pictures should be in your own personal directory. This is for security reasons. However, this is just the default, you can really store catalog or pictures wherever you want. But I would recommend keeping pictures and catalog separate so you can avoid the problem you ran into on this occasion.

Question 2: See above. For some reason, your images where in the same folder as your catalog, which usually doesn't happen, but can be customized within the settings to happen. But this generally doesn't occur. I think the problem came from the naming you used. Calling the catalog "My Pictures" creates a folder with the same name. Windows XP uses a folder also called "My Pictures" which is the default for a lot of image related functions. It is possible you either were saving your images to the wrong "My Pictures" folder (the one with the catalog). That, or you saved your catalog into the system "My Pictures" folder.

Hi,

I want to add to my previous discussion about catalog. Whenever you create any catalog in PSE, a folder of same name is created (by default location is: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs) in your hard drive. This folder contains some sub folders and other files. Note that 'this folder does not contain media (which you import in your catalog)'.
This answers your first question. So PSE catalog and actual media are present in two different folders.

Regarding your query on deletion of catalog:
Through EO there is only one way to delete the actual media. Select one/multiple images, right click it and select 'Delete from catalog'. A 'confirm deletion' dialog will appear. If you click on check box for delete from hard drive then selected media will be deleted from hard drive.
You are saying you deleted a catalog folder from your hard drive and this resulted in deletion of your catalog folder 'along with your actual media'. It is very strange case. Please tell me the steps to reproduce this problem.

I will try to explain how I got to this point.

All my data is stored on an internal E-drive on my PC. The PSE 10 application is on the C-drive. After PSE 10 was installed and the PSE 6 catalog converted I was left with a folder called My Pictures (on E-drive) that contained both the PSE catalogue files and all of my pictures.

It was then suggested that I re-convert the PSE 6 catalog to fix the problem I was having.I did this and ended up with a new folder on E-drive called My Pictures 1 that contained the catalog files (for the new catalog called My Pictures 1) and a copy of all of my actual pictures.

So now I had 2 folders that contained all of my images (duplicated) and cataog files for My Pictures and My Pictures1 catalogs.

When I opened the MP1 catalog in PSE10 I found that all of the thumbnails were linked to pictures in the folder My Pictures (not sure how this happened but I was able to confirm that both catalogs were linked to the same set of pictures so I removed the duplicates in the folder My Pictures 1).

Then I went into PSE10, selected the old defective catalog (My Pictures) and deleted it. This is when all of my pictures were deleted from the My Pictures folder on the E-drive.

This also surprised me, but I had backups so it was not a disaster.

Hi Al,

Also as MP1 catalog is working fine now, so you want to preserve that. I assume all your images are either directly in 'MP1' or in a sub directory inside MP1. Please procede as-

1. Move (cut & paste) all your media inside a new folder within MP1 (through OS).
2. Go back to Organizer10, select all images and choose 'File->Move'. Click on 'Browse' button and choose the location where your files were originally.

Probably after this you will end up having a healthy catalog MP1 with your media inside the same folder MP1. Please recheck the same thing and when you are 100% sure, you can get rid off your MP catalog and media inside MP1 folder (which was moved in step-1).
If this does not happen "please do not delete any thing" just let me know the results.

At this point everything seems to be working fine and I don't want to make any more changes.

I have a folder on E-drive called PSE10DB that contains all of the PSE10 catalog files for my catalog which i renamed PSE10DB.

All of the media files are contained in the My Pictures folder also on E-drive. I like keeping all of my pictures in the My Pictures folder/library and don't want to end up with multiple locations. I know it is not necessary - but it is my preference.

The next time I go through this I would like to understand how to upgrade/convert and not move or copy my media files from the preferred location.

The catalog conversion process should only make a copy of your catalog file, which is then updated to the new databasing standards of the new version. You images should be completely untouched (unduplicated and unmoved). Also, the catalog should appear in the exact same folder as the the original folder that has been converted.

Instead, it sounds like you are restoring a backup of a catalog. This would behave the way you describe. It would place the image files in the restore location.

How are you performing the "conversion"? What File menu command are you using?

I opened PSE10 went to the catalog dialog and used convert. After I found the PSE6 catalog (which was in a "custom location" on the E-Drive), and hit convert I ended up with an additional folder called My Pictures 1 with the catalog and a copy of all of my images (on the E-Drive). I wanted all my existing and new images to be in My Pictures - and it was while trying to get things back to that that I lost all images.
