Photoshop Elements: Photo Downloader on OS X uses wrong [shot date] for JPEG files

I also URGENTLY ask for a fix of the problem. The guys on the hotline have no idea of this obvious bug and asked me time consuming "workarounds" with pagelong instructions which did not help a bit except amking changes on my Win7 system.

Since years I used to let the organizer create a folder jj mm dd which is 2 characters shorter than the provided, but unfunctional jjjj mm dd. Years ago I asked Adobe to include jjmmdd (without spaces in the folder name). This would be much better if you let a program make webpages from a folder. These spaces always translate in badly readable html%20folder%20names.

So I ask Adobe for a solution to make the folder names that the organizer creates USER DEFINEABLE FOLDER NAMES, as it has been done in version 10 with the file names of the photos. This seems to work well.

This folder name bug makes me feel really frustrated, because it creates a lot of work - I must change EVERY new folder on every day when I make a photo by hand. This should be fixed very soon, and NOT in a year with version 11 for more $$$.

When I import photos from my card reader and rename, PSE10 is numbering them with the most recent getting the lowest sequence number and oldest one the highest. This didn't happen with PSE8. Can this be fixed?

I'm not Adobe just a user but have you tried the workaround of temporarily changing the date format in Preferences -> General to MM/DD/YYYY before you do the download and then changing it back again afterwards? I seem to get different options and it then creates the correct folder name.

Adobe very rarely issue any patches for their systems (only ACR) so you may have a long wait for a proper fix [hope they prove me wrong on that].

Astonishing - a case of 'new, but not necessarily better'. Please, Adobe, listen to what we are all saying and do something.

As a fiddly workaround I've just tried this:

In the Photo downloader window select the 'Create Subfolders' dropdown, and click on 'Custom Groups (Advanced)' - In 'Group Name' dropdown select 'Shot Date (yyyy mm dd)' - Move the little blue slider above to the far left. Your folders will be correctly named.

But, Adobe, we shouldn't have to be doing this!

Just to add to my last post - you have to do the procedure new for each download. What a fiddle!

This works corectly if all are shot on the same day, otherwise you have to fiddle around jogging the pointer to the right to get the folders split by date, but not by time (far left = all in one folder, named after the short date of the first photo; far right = many folders, named after shot date and time of each photo)

David - thanks for the suggestion - it worked for me.

I have a couple of observations to add:

- At first, I didn't think that you needed to touch the slider as it seemed to be automatically set to create a folder per day. I uploaded pictures taken on 2 days and it was set to 2 initially. However, I've just uploaded some more pictures that I took yesterday (155 pics) and it was set to 66 folders oddly - not quite sure how it worked that one out!

- if I have lots of pictures to upload, the "Custom Groups (Advanced)" option initially doesn't appear in the dropdown list. Instead there is an option called "<Creating Custom Groups...>" which doesn't do anything, but I believe is an indication that PSE is analysing the timestamps of the pictures to work out what the groups can be. Waiting a few seconds, this option changes to "Custom Groups (Advanced)"!

come on Adobe - sort it out. Give us back (yyyy mm dd) as an option for create subfolder(s) during download.

I noticed the Elemenst 10 import function does not create subfolders in the form
yyyy mm dd. Although I selected this option the created subfolder always looks like yyyy dd mm
It worked with PSE version 6 and 8 before without any problem.

Hi there,

I’m hoping you can help with this small issue I am having with the Elements 10 trial.

When importing images from my card reader, I want to store them in a folder of “Shot Date” format – yyyy mm dd

This is an option I can choose in Elements Organizer – Photo Downloader view,

But on import the images are sorted in a folder – yyyy dd mm

On checking Edit > Preferences I can see my preferred option (yyyy mm dd) is not an option.

Why then is the “yyyy mm dd” offered in the Elements Organizer – Photo Downloader view?

Might I also advise that this is Not the case in the current Elements V8 that I am using, where my images can & are being imported using the format yyyy mm dd

Hi Jennifer.

Commiserations, you will see if you read all the posts in this thread that you are not alone, and so far Adobe don't seem to care. We are stuck with a product that is 'new but not necessarily better'.

My work-around a few posts up and Stephen Johnson's contribution a couple of days later give a way of achieving what you want to do.

But surely Adobe you should be letting us know what you propse to do about this serious issue.

Perhaps the only way to get them to listen and fix this bug, is to start posting poor reviews on forums and sites like Amazon, somehing like:

Not fit for purpose!

Warning do not buy this software if you are based outside US. International dates are not supported in Elements 10! Previous versions did support International dates. The consequences are that imported photos get put in file folders with unusable names.
