While viewing the Organizer in the Thumbnail View Display mode, the images will be displayed in order of creation date, newest to oldest or the reverse. To have your files listed in alphabetical order, change to the Folder Location View Display mode. However, this will limit you to viewing only the contents of individual folders.

To enable Folder View, click the Display button in the top right of the window. There you will have a list of the views available.

The Folder View emulates the Finder/Explorer method of viewing files. Only the contents of a single folder will be displayed. But they will be listed alphanumerically.

Hi Brett,

this solves my problem. When the pictures are listed in alphabetical order in den Folder Location View Display mode I can move them into an album where the alphabetical order remains preserved and that is what I needed.

Thank you.

I can find absolutely no reference as to how to "sort by name" in Organizer. My folder in windows explorer shows the correct numerical sequence but viewing that same folder in Organizer shows them all jumbled. Also, my numbered photos also happen to be in time sequence too, but when I tried time sequence they remained jumbled. Please tell me how to do it and exactly where to locate the "button" or whatever in the program. I have looked in everything I see on the Organizer screen but I am still baffled. Thanks

I am replying to my own question as my question was merged with another one, I wanted to clarify....I am using Elements 10, "Folder Location" (which is listed under "Display") but I can find no place in which to select "sort by name". If someone can tell me exactly where it is located on the screen, I would appreciate it. Thanks again

Once you are in Folder Location view it sorts files by name, there is no option to change it to anything else.

I have discovered why I am having a problem. I have 550 photos in the folder numbered from A001 To A550. I have this same folder on my C drive and on my external hard drive. They are identical and each shows all 550 photos in windows explorer. But in the folder view, down at the bottom, it lists only 512 in the folder on my C drive. I did a "search by filename" and it told me there was no such file. What could be the problem? All photos came off my camera's card at the same time.

Please create a new thread as what you are asking here is not about sort order.

Yes, I am referring to sort order...by name appended with a number. I am wondering why they show up in random order in Elements when they are in the correct name order in Explorer. I want to sort them by A, B, etc. Where else would I post this? Thanks.

Sorry, in your post above you do not mention anything about sort order, just that you do not have all files displayed.

Can you post a screen shot to better illustrate what you mean by "random order". Because in Folder View, it only displays the files alpha-numerically.

Hi, I am having the same problem with PSE 9.03. The files in my folder view are not matching what is actually in my Windows explorer folders. See the screen shot. I have selected the folder 1966. However it displays the image from folder 1968. The explorer view I included shows that in the 1966 folder I actually have three photos that are not displayed at all. When I switch to the 1968 folder in the folder view window there are no photos displayed. How is this possible? Note, this database was imported from PSE 8. Not sure if that matters. The same issue happnes with the majority of the folders in folder view. In some cases, one folder in folder view will contain photos from several explorer folders all at once. Hope you can help.

When I've seen this type of behavior in the past, it was due to corruption of the catalog database.

Was this catalog created with this version of Photoshop Elements, or had you converted it from a prior version?

Have you ever repaired or optimized the catalog (if this is a converted catalog, did you repair it before converting)?

Do you have a backup to restore from?

Your system defines pictures by date and time. I have photos in a file which are in a numerical sequence I created so they are in the order I desire. Your system seems to totally ignore this sequence when brought into the edit feature or organize feature.

How can I list my photos in the Organizer in Numerical order according to their file name? ie: I want photo number 1025 to be in the Orgainzer before photo number 1034 and after photo number 0958.

Brett,

I was wondering if the alpabetic/alphanumeric sort order could be added as an option (in the thumbnail view) in a future version of PSE. There have been many requests here, and on other forums for this facility.

The folder view does provide it but only for one folder.

I could imagine that it may take a while to do a sort on a large number of photos (which is perhaps why Adobe doesn't include it) but feel that it would be a good option to have.

It is sad that Organizer is not able to sort a key selection of images from multiple source files into alphabetic order by file name. It can sort by ‘Date (Newest First)’ and ‘Date (Oldest First)’ so it should not be that hard to make it sort alphabetically.

When images are loaded into Albums a new sort ‘Album Order’ is offered, and the wording of the ‘Options – Preferences - Keyword Tags & Albums’ for Albums, supported by the Help description, gives hope of an alphabetic sort. However this is misleading. It says Alphabetic or Manual but it should say Album order or Manual. Album order will only be alphabetic if the source images have been pre-sorted into alphabetic sequence by originating in the same folder and are then imported in Folder View. If imported to the Album as thumbnails in Thumbnail View they will remain in the sequence of the thumbnails and even if Alphabetic is selected in the Options they will not be sorted alphabetically.

An alphabetic sort would enhance any future release version of Optimize.

To Brett N

A little late but thanks. Go to Display, Folder location and the pictures are imported in the sequence you created IGNORING DATE AND TIME.

That should really not be the case. How is the file Date/Time different than the "sequence you created" them? Seems that the Date/Time the image is created is the Date/Time of the image, and thus it would make sense that the images are sequenced in the order in which they were created.

In PSE11, Is it possible to sort photos alphabetically rather than just by date?
In PSE10, the Display: Folder Location sorted by file name and the Display: Thumbnail View offered sorting by date.

I just returned Elements 11 after finding that you have eliminated the ability, in Media view, to sort pictures by file name. This makes the program completely unusable because of the way I include relevant information in my picture file names. I think this i s just another example of a failing I have found in your programs: you frequently decide you know how people are going to use your programs and build to match your concepts. Would it have been so difficult to allow people to sort by fine name? Why eliminate it?

I use my family's initials in naming files of pictures of them. A picture of my wife with two grandchildren might be bmb,rcm,gek,5.jpg, All such pictures would showtogether in the Media view if sorted by file name. I would know the next number to use if a new pic were processed and I could quickly go to all such in the file list to find the one I want. File date is not interesting to me since many pictures have no real date just the date I scanned the picture.
