Photoshop Elements: Generic thumbnail in Organizer

I am using Elements 5.0.2. When downloading photos the program crashed. Since then when I download photos and try to view more than one from the catalogue at once I get icons with an egg timer symbol on them but when I view previously uploaded photos this doesn't happen. The program seems to run a lot more slowly. I un-installed Elements and re-installed it. It made no difference. I deleted a lot of photos from the catalogue. This didn't help. I deleted the apparently problematical photos from the catalogue and the next time I loaded (new) photos I had the same problem. I tried to edit one of the photos in "Full Edit" to straighten the horizon but I only got the circular, rotating cursur not the little cross-hair cursor I normally get. Is there a fix for this? I am running on Windows 7 but it has worked fine on this platform for well over a year.

Possibly the thumbnail cache was damaged in the crash, preventing new files from being added. Try deleting it and let it get recreated and load new thumbnails. Follow solution 3 from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/916/cpsid_91...

All of the sudden my Elements 9 is not saving photos as high res thumbnails even though the thumbnail res is set as high on my iMac. The originals are high resolution. What could have suddenly changed. I have checked all settings and preferences and started and restarted both the program and the computer.

Photoshop Elements 9.0, thumbnails are not being generated. Even if left on overnight thumbnails are missing.

I see an hourglass on most of my thumbnails. Older thumbnails are there, some are generated quickly when opened up, the others just seem to never be generated.

Since my last upload of 500 pics, my Adobe Elements 6.0 shows an hourglass in place of each photo, then laboriously converts each hourglass to a photo only as I scroll to it. HELP!!
