Photoshop Elements: "Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable" What does this means, and how do I fix it?

Hi, i'm new to photoshop so i'm not familair with everything & having a problem with using the lasso tools. Everytime i go use them this pops up

" Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable"

Can someone please tell me what this means, and how i fix it??

It means you're trying to edit a smart object instead of a normal layer - and you can't edit them directly.

First, read up on smart objects.
Then select a normal layer for editing, or open the smart object and edit the contents.

that was incredibly unhelpful

Have both photoshop and illustrator open, on photoshop click on the layer you want to edit, then go to layer>smart objetcs>edit content....it will send the editable layer to illustrator.

Hi Kylie,

Another option would be to choose Layer>Simplify Layer... to convert the Smart Object layer into a 'normal' raster layer.

There is not smart object option in Elements.
You only use 'simplify layer' as mentioned by Jeffrey Tranberry.

hi Kylie,
Adding more to the answer of Chris and Jeffrey, smart object is a layer that contains data either raster or vector images in a non-destructive container.Due to the behaviour of non-destructive nature of smart objects it pop-ups that error message
" Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable".
You can simple convert it to a normal layer either-
1)By double cliking on smart object layer.
2)Go to layer menu >simplify layer (As said by Jeffrey )

thanks,
Neeraj

Seems as if it might always be a good time to convert your selection to a Smart Object when dealing in scale or the possibility of re-sizing later. Can anyone give me a simple rule of thumb of when to use it or not to convert to a S.O?

Thanks,

Two things you can do:
-Edit the smart object by double clicking its icon in the Layers Panel
-Convert the smart object by right clicking it in the Layers Panel and selecting Rasterize Layer

What if it doesn’t become me a layer in the layer panel? Mine is just outlined with a moving outline and I can’t do anything to it.
Thanks

I'm having the same issue, except it's not a smart object and i still get the message. I follow your instructions Layer >> Smart Objects >> and it says convert to smart object, not convert to layer because it's already a layer. Why am I still getting that message?

easy way is select the layer then

layer -> rasterize -> smart object.

I'm going to tell you guys the best way fix that bug in a few seconds.
1. Duplicate your file trough Photoshop.
2. Go to the main file and delete all of your layers.
3. Select all of your layers from the duplicated file and drag and drop it to the main file.
Happy?
