Photoshop: Can't transfer files from Canon DPP

There is an option in Canon's Digital photo Professional (4.8.20.0) to 'Transfer [photos] to Photoshop'.  It doesn't work, instead returning the message "Failed to start Photoshop".  I asked Canon and they say it's a Photoshop problem.  I'm using Elements 14 (20151206.m.8370) x64.  Any ideas?

Maybe it only works with the full version of Photoshop, not Photoshop Elements?

Thanks John - That's quite possible (and the most likely explanation).  I've asked Canon what directory and .exe DPP tries to call, as I can't see anywhere in DPP where I can specify these things.

Photoshop probably will say it is a Canon problem and you will be caught in Tech Support Ping Pong. Happens all the time. Call up Canon and yell at them, or just do an easy workaround like transferring it to a New Files folder and let Photoshop pick it up from there.

Didn't need to yell. I went back to Canon Customer Service and politely pointed out that is was their app that wouldn't interface and requested an explanation. They referred to Tech Support who replied next day. A refreshing change not to get caught in the ping-pong trap!

Lloyd - you're right of course, and it's not difficult to do the workaround you suggest.  it just annoys me when there's a feature that won't do what it says!  I wouldn't need DPP if Adobe would provide adequate support for RAW in PSE 14 - it's only two years old, but they won't supply the means to open RAW files taken with my Canon 77D.

Indirectly they do. Download the free Adobe DNG Converter and convert your 77D raw files to DNG. PSE will open those.

Canon have advised an alternative solution using DPP, which works fine, but see my response to Jack Byard below.

Actually Canon have replied. DPP 4 will interface with all full Photoshops from 7 onwards, but does not interface with Elements. They have helpfully talked me through the Batch process in DPP to show how to do mass CR2 conversions that can then be dragged into PSE. This is an acceptable solution for me.

My main disappointment is that I have to use 'intermediate' software such as DPP because Adobe will not maintain and update software that is only two years old. I understand why they want to bring out new flashier versions of PSE and PSE every few months and charge for that, but I'd hoped there would be support for software that's only a couple of years old.

You don't say what computer you're using, but if it's a Mac, Image Capture will download anything. https://www.apple.com/sg/pro/photo/imagecapture.html

Canon in the US are always helpful and efficient unlike the UK whose usual reply is to refer to the appropriate page of the manual.

Just wondering, if you still get notifications from this post, what was the solution?  I just bought a Canon 5D mark iv and have Photoshop Elements 14 and can't do anything with my photos...  Would appreciate any help you can offer.
