Elements: problem with layer content edges are feathered instead of solid

Scenario -

I opened a perfectly square JPG (4000 by 4000) which was created to be a seamless tile. 

I used Ctrl T and set it at 50%, constrain proportions, and selected a corner for the reference point location.

After using Ctrl J three times, I moved the layers so they would be like four tiles touching.  I used the move tool and the shift key to help them align perfectly.

When they merge (and before merging), the edges are not sharp edged pixels, but slightly transparent pixels (feathered, I guess), so a light line appear across the middle vertically and horizontally.

I also tried duplicating the bottom layer several ways before transforming and had the same problem with feathering/transparency.


I am using Photoshop Elements 2018, and assume this might be the same in CC.

I hope someone knows about this and has a solution.

I believe this controlled by the transform interpolation [tool] option. Try a different interpolation type, I believe bilinear may solve your issue.

Annoying aspect of the transform tool....

Thank you for the tip, Stephen!  I tried resizing with Image>Resize and then dragging into a new document and it does eliminate the feathered edges.  That appears to be a good workaround.

Are you just trying to double the size of your tileable image from 4000 px square to 8000 px square?

The feather could be in the original image and caused by jpeg compression.

No, I was making a grid of the same image four times within the same document, to test the tiling effect.

Did you look at the edges of the jpeg before doing anything to it?

This issue can be recreated using a solid shape made from vector in PS, and using "bicubic" interpolation when reducing size, the edges will become anti-aliased/slightly soft. This can be solved by using Bilinear instead

JEA - Yes, I did.  And Stephen's tip (the first reply in this thread) helped identify the problem.
