Elements: How do I configure Elements as an extenal editor? (for use with Lightroom, Aperture, iPhoto)

I am using the trial version of elements 10. I have my RAW images in iPhoto and in iPhoto preferences I select Elements as the external editor, edit in RAW and save edits as 16bit TIFF files. In the PSE start-up window, I set the default to open the editor. Now when I go to edit the image from iPhoto, PSE starts but there is no image in the window. What am I doing wrong? Is it because I am still in trial mode?

When you select the external editor in iPhoto's preferences, make sure you choose the "Photoshop Elements Editor" not the alias for Photoshop Elements (which launches the welcome screen):

Photoshop Elements Editor does not support 16 bit images.
Of course, Photoshop does.

Save the files as 8-bit TIFF for compatibility for Photoshop Elements.

Well, I unselected the "save edits as 16 bit TIFF files" and I tried it again. It duplicates the image in iPhoto and PSE opens and it is blank. Can I not use PSE as an external editor from within iPhoto?

What do you mean PSE opens but it's blank? Do you mean the applications open but there's no file opened at all? Or the application opens and a blank document is open but the document window is blank?

Paul,

One thing that you can try is opening the same file directly in Photoshop Elements Editor. If that file opens directly in PSE, it should open when you send it from iPhoto.

Also as Jeffrey said, use "Photoshop Elements Editor" not the alias for Photoshop Elements

Bingo! Thanks Jeffrey. That was the issue. I was pointing to the alias and not the actual application

I have elected to edit photos from iphoto (on my iMac) in photoshop elements 9. When I click edit in iphoto, photoshop turns on to the welcome page, but the photo is nowhere to be found.

Thanks for giving me the right clue. I couldn't find any file that was called "photoshop editor" but I did find another option that worked. I am not clear as to the various titles. Thanks again.

I recently upgraded my Mac fro iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 and now I can't open a photo in PSE 8 by double clicking on the photo. The instructions provided in kb403605 don't work as the screen that opens (General) after opening iPhoto and choosing iPhoto > Preferences is not the same as with iPhoto 9. If I click on the Advanced tab, I see that I'm set to open PSE as normal, but it's not working. Is iPhoto 11 compatible with PSE 8 relative to opening a photo in PSE? The process I've evolved is positively painful!

The way iPhoto 11 handles Photoshop Elements 8 as an external editor is completely the attribute of iPhoto. When PSE8 was released, iPhoto 11 wasn't around so it is difficult to say that it works fine with iPhoto 11.

Please raise the issue at iPhoto forums.

I am using iphoto on my Mac to store pictures but want to use Elements 10 to edit my photos. I have set the preferences in iphoto to edit in Elements but when I select a picture in iphoto to edit, Elements opens but there is no image. How do I get the picture in Elements?

The answer provided above re the "extermnal editor" works and is correct. It just takes a little patience to get to that option.
