Elements 15: My Catalog back up concern?

I have just completed a full backup of My Catalog of 70,000 images. I was just about to delete my previous backup, which had about 45,000 images, but have noticed that the file sizes of both the .tly and .buc files of the earlier backup are larger than the corresponding files of my latest back up (ie .tly:  30805 KB > 22823 KB  and .buc: 339244 KB > 317330 KB). I don't know what the .tly and .buc files contain but would have thought that they should have increased in size. Should I be concerned?

If you have set the destination folder in the external drive to the root folder, this issue has been reported. You must create a destination folder for your backup first.
You could use your Explorer to browse your resulting backup folders to compare how many media files like jpg or raws are in both.
You can also check that the catalog.buc is a simple renamed copy of the catalog.pse15db file in your catalog folder (to be found with the menu Help >> System Info).

Hi Michel,

Thank you for your immediate and helpful reply. I did create a destination folder before undertaking the back up. The number of media files in the back up folder looks correct. I have found  the catalog.pse15db file under:

Catalog Location: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\My Catalog new 1\

but am afraid that I don't know how to check that it is the same as catalog.buc . Could you please explain how to do this?

You can first compare the size of the catalog.buc with that of the catalog.pse15db, they should be identical of very close.
You can also create a kind of catalog copy from the catalog.buc. You create a new folder, copy and paste the catalog.buc, rename it back to catalog.pse15db. Now, this is a minimalist catalog which you can open by double clicking, which opens the organizer with the catalog. You should recover your tags, captions, notes, stacks, albums and version sets, but nothing about your people or places tagging. It's like comparing two different catalogs.
