After upgrading to Mac OS 10.13.2 photoshop elements 10.0 saves empty .psd files

elements 10.0 will open and allow me to work, but once the file is saved and closed it will not reopen: and error message appears saying "the file is empty". 

There are also random crashes which I report.  

What is going on and when/how can it be fixed?
