Lightroom Mobile: iOS: Missing Pictures, Presets, and Watermark Data after 5.4 Update

Yesterday when I use the Lightroom Mobile, it was okay. I still have my presets and pictures saved in the apps but today , 18th August 2020 , after I updated the apps on Apps Store, all of my pictures and presets gone. I really need this to be fix as soon as possible. Please help me as I really need all those pictures and presets.

We are aware that some customers who updated to Lightroom 5.4.0 on iPhone and iPad may be missing photos and presets that were not synced to the Lightroom cloud. 

A new version of Lightroom mobile (5.4.1) for iOS and iPadOS has now been released that prevents this issue from affecting additional customers. 

Installing version 5.4.1 will not restore missing photos or presets for customers affected by the problem introduced in 5.4.0. 

We know that some customers have photos and presets that are not recoverable. We sincerely apologize to any customers who have been affected by this issue.

If you are affected by this issue, please refer to the information in this forum thread.


Note:

No assets in the Lightroom cloud were lost or are at risk. Lightroom mobile on Android, Lightroom desktop on macOS and Windows, as well as Lightroom Classic are not affected.

I lost my own presets and the ones I bought! I turned off sincing because I couldn’t deal with Lightroom auto downloading all of my pictures from camera roll before I got a chance to delete the bad ones. It’s insane is all my work really lost? I am subscribed, I checked the link that you provided. None of my new photos or presets are there :( Probably because I stopped the sincing.

It is very amateurish not to have a form of recovery or error that you made, Adobe. Do you realize how many workers you may have affected? Photos are memories and you just ended them.

I was able to have back my Lightroom ios files, withoud adobe cloud account / sync.
First Done a restore from a 16/08 full backup from finder. (ex Itunes backup)
Maybe choosed wrong backup (wrong date name) = No files and lightromm 5.4.1.

Then erased my iphone.
Restored it from 16/08 backup (usb plugged in computer)
Obtained Lightroom 5.3xxx and my files
Downloaded all the apps again on wifi network

The pain in the ass is that i can't log anymore in iphone/settingspersonal account/ itunes store & appstore :

impossible connexion / authentification failed
The identiification code is right (from 1password, connected on other devices)

Hi Kris, please try a restore anyway. In Apple helpdesk document I have found these lines: „... 3.Sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID.
Choose a backup. Look at the date and size of each and pick the most relevant. After you choose, the transfer starts.“

There will probably be several different date iCloud backups to chose from when you are restoring (that's how it was for me at least).

No if you have no backups from before the event and were not syncing to the cloud, the data is gone and unrecoverable. The data on the phone is strongly encrypted and if it gets released from active storage, it is unrecoverable even if it is still in bits on the phone's memory. This is what makes security strong on iPhones and modern Android phones (you can't read data of a phone without knowing the passcode even if you take the memory out and directly connect to it as the whole thing is encrypted and encrypted per app using separate keys) but also makes it that you have to make absolutely sure you have backups of your important data in the cloud or on physical media. That doesn't excuse the error made here but it is very important you don't leave important data in one place. Phones die all the time.

Rikk, why did I have to hear about this avoidable serious data loss defect via The Register three days after Adobe were aware of it? Although I am a subscriber, this could still have affected photos not yet synced to cloud. A post on a forum is not good enough. 

The fundamental purpose of a DAM is to safely store assets, not delete them. Adobe should have quickly and proactively warned all users via email not to open the app before updating. Hopefully this was simply epically poor incident response compounding an already horrendous QA problem, rather than an intentional decision. Regardless of many Adobe LR features that I love, I could not consider Abobe a serious player if you have put avoiding corporate embarrassment ahead of your users' data.

This is giving me serious pause for thought over whether to move away from Adobe after almost a decade as a loyal Lightroom / CC Photography Cloud customer. If you cannot catch a defect this obvious or respond in the right way to it, it does not give me confidence that you will manage more subtle issues that might endanger my data.

In order to rebuild trust after this type of incident, it is common for companies to publish a transparent incident analysis showing that they have identified and understood root causes, have learned from them and are addressing them. https://aws.amazon.com/message/41926/ is a good example of doing this well - ironically, for an incident that affected Adobe's cloud services.

Will Adobe be doing this?

I happened to find an iCloud backup from before the wrecking Lightroom update a few days ago. However when I restored this backup, it took a few hours to load the Lightroom app (seemed stuck, I was hoping it was download the library of several gigabytes). Then it suddenly started to reload (new loading circle) and loaded really fast. When I opened the app it was the newest version with still no library.

I'm restoring again now, since somehow the files should be there (it's a backup from before the update). I'll immediately turn off automatic app updates.

Any ideas about how to handle this & make sure it installs the old version with library?!

Lightroom Classic does not sync presets to or from the Ecosystem clients of which Lightroom iOS is a member.  As such this issue could not have affected your Lightroom Classic presets.

Hello. I lost my pictures like everyone else. I was furious, very angry, but thanks to my iCloud backup and because I didn't have automatic app updates turned on and because I hadn't backed up to iCloud after the app update (it's done every night), I was able to restore EVERYTHING. I'm not going to upgrade again in a few years.

Hello, same issue here. After the automatic update to Lightroom mobile 5.4 on my iPad Pro (active subscription), my whole library is lost. I tried to restore my iPad from backup and it did in fact restore my 50GB lightroom libary (it shows in iPad Preferences/Storage), BUT as soon as i tried to launch the app, it again deleted the whole library. Also, looking again in Preferences, now Lightroom shrinked from 50GB to 500MB, so in fact launching the new App version 5.4 deletes the library. I still have that iCloud backup though, so please fix this very urgent bug, so i can try to do a restore again, when it is fixed. I need my library...

So the newly released 5.4.1 Update resolved my issue. After my story from above, i restored my iPad again and Lightroom was again 50GB in Preferences/Storage but this time i didn't launch the app. Instead, I waited and updated Lightroom to the newly released 5.4.1. Now launching the app presents me with all my photos again.
So if you previously launched or deleted the faulty version 5.4, you have a chance of restoring, it should work then.

@David Kniazevas Send your two days of camera roll in a safe place (iCloud photo sync, Mac or pc ). erase your device before full restoring of your old backup.

I’m sorry I have to say this, but if you don’t have a backup, then you cannot restore your photos and presets, period. If you did make backups, then you can restore from an earlier backup too. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

I shot an incredible sunset on Mt Adams and then some fantastic images of my partner with the mountain in the background. I was able to view and edit while in the field but was planning to do the bulk of my edits on my desktop once I got back. Due to not having an internet signal, no backups were able to be made. I never thought in a million years something like this could happen. So disappointing. All of my images are gone!

I am running the latest version 5.4.1 now. But unfortunately, my images are still gone. It's just so sad. It's surprising that there's not a hidden folder I can get access to where those images must have been stored. Oh well, at least these weren't a client's wedding photos or something like that.

I've just finished an iCloud back up. It should have returned to the day when the app didn't update to version 5.4.0, or did, but I don't open it. I'm afraid to open it because I don't know what version it is now. In App Store, there are no available updates for Lightroom, and there is no icon "update" as well, just the icon "open". Logically, if iCloud returned it to version 5.4.0, and if I open it now, the photos and edits will be gone. But at the same time, the app doesn't look like it needs an update, so it should be version 5.4.1 (but when did it manage to update then? or my iPhone automatically downloaded the newest version when restored it?). Please help, should I open the app?

I have seen this in the past after a major upgrade or change to the software(I'm referring to another app not related to Adobe). Spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple and all they could tell me, in the end, was that the traits were as if I had uninstalled it and reinstalled it when I hadn't, I updated. Their advice was as per Rikk's - to recover the app from an iTunes backup on the PC but that's providing you do backup on the PC. So for non-subscribers, maybe Adobe can put in a fail-safe but really, Apple should sort this out.

Did you sync originals to the cloud In your settings? Or just smart previews? Either way something should be there for subscribers iirc
