Lightroom Desktop: Map view/module - Ability to geotag photos

I'm probably at the low end of the prosumer category when it comes to photography. I've been using Lightroom for a couple of years. I love the multiple platform feature on the new CC, but geotagging images has always been important for me (enough so that onboard GPS is a mandatory feature when I look for a camera). I had been adding locations to older images in what's now CC Classic.

Are we going to get that ability in the new CC?

Even more importantly, will the new AI-based search allow us to do things like pull pictures based on location? And, if so, will we be able to do things like define a radius? This was all possible when we had the maps panel, but seems to be challenging now.

At least entering coordinates would be great!

Geotagging is the single-most reason I have not switched from Lightroom Classic CC to Lightroom CC. Other competing cloud libraries like Apple Photos and Google Photos have a decent alternative.

Any hopes for near feature?

There is always a hope. The thing is, how long are you able to stay hoping :) There are only 123 people asking for this, not a priority I guess.

It is kind of crazy they don't have this feature. This and some for of iOS live photo support are whats keeping me from reactivating my subscription.

I've been shocked to just discover this, halfway through transferring everything to CC. I thought this was meant to be an upgrade, but to not have this essential (for me) feature feels like a massive step backwards. Sure it can read already-present GPS coordinates but my DSLR doesn't have GPS, and even if it did I wouldn't want to drain battery all the time by using it, when I should be able to tag where photos were taken on import. Please add this feature back in, thanks!

Yeah. They keep repeating Lightroom CC is not an upgrade but different software for another sort of customers but I believe they simply have to say that since the CC is unfinished on so many levels.

Right, I wish they'd made that clearer. I just saw it come up as one of the many updates in the Adobe Cloud desktop menu and figured it was a straight upgrade with decent cloud integration. Sadly not.

When I manually enter precise address of the place (coordinates are not supported by Lightroom), it shows correct place on minimap (OSM) but opens wrong place after clicking on it (Google maps).

Or vice versa, minimap shows wrong location of that address but After clicking on it, it opens Google maps on the right place.

I think that map service should be united (I prefer OSM for many reasons), not show output from OSM but open link in Google maps without option.
Or get output from OSM and transform it into coordinates and open Google maps (ugliest maps ever) on that coordinates, not address text phrase, if you need to use Google maps for some unknown reason.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Need feature to manually geotag photos.

Geotagged photos are really table stakes, and have been for a long time. We really need to be able to set the location of a photo by finding it on a map within the Lightroom CC app. And ideally, by importing a GPS track. But, at least, by finding a location and clicking on it in a map control. Please see Apple Photos for how to do this. Right now, I have to use third-party software to geotag all my photos before import, which adds precious minutes to my workflow.

Also, there needs to be an ability to find and filter photos by lack of any location data, so that they can be identified for geotagging. This would be so useful for keeping a library in order. I'm not even talking about visualizing them on a map yet, just allowing us to edit them properly.

I use Lightroom Classic for tagging GPS data on picture.
I want tagging on Lightroom CC.

Geotagging is definitely an essential missing feature for me. I liked being able to just drag and drop pictures on to a map in Lightroom Classic. This is my number 1 feature request for Lightroom CC.

Yes please, this is so annoying. 12€ per month and this killer feature is still missing.
Horrible workflow, if you want to edit your raws on you iPad Pro but before have to import on PC/Mac + use Geotagger on PC/Mac.

Desperately searching for Geotagging app alternatives. Found „cascable“ (main feature is remote control for camera + download to mobile device), but raw import from SD / iPad storage doesn‘t work...

So i wanted a place to store all my photos and have some extra benefits. I used to have google photos and that does faces, locations even scans the photos for items like beach/cloud/house etc names. Now i'am missing the most important feature. Showing a map of where the photo's where taken. It is easy to find back to pictures you stored. I don't mind paying the few bucks but i didn't even blink to think something so trivial isn't there. You already show the geo tags with a picture so why can't i search or have a map of the world to see those locations? Does no tool has the holy grail these days. Just sync multiple devices, locally too when needed and have faces/tags/geo/object scanning etc..

Just a text description of a location is not only insufficient, but also not working. You type in location name, City and Country (Prague, Czechia, Europe) and you get minimap ignoring it and showing even wrong continent (Somewhere in Salvador, central America). After clicking on it, it opens google maps with mostly accurate result. This is just mess.

I really would like to have a geo tagging feature on LR CC.

Now I adopted my workflow: First edit in LR mobile on iPad, then geotag the synced cloud-stored pictures in LR Classic.
If I now open the pictures in LR mobile again, I do net see geotag informations. And when I export the pics from LR mobile, even with active export geotag information checkbox, the exported jpgs do not include GPS data. So I have to export from LR Classic on my desktop. Annoying..

You have to start with importing the photos to LR Classic and geotag them there. Then sync to the cloud. This method will allow the geo-tagging to be retained in the cloud based apps.

This is the way I do it, and it works. But it's not ideal for people who don't use LR Classic as their main editing application.
