Lightroom CC: Artifact problems with photos saved as HEIC on IOS11

After using a 6S for several years with Lightroom CC, I got an iPhone X. I'm having problems with artifacts when I adjust the hightlights to correct for an overexposed sky.

I noticed this phone was set to save the pictures in the the HEIC format by default. I didn't use this in the old phone. Could this be the problem? It happens on both the front and back cameras.

 Anyone else see this problem?

Which camera app are you using? The Apple app and then import from the camera roll into Lightroom, or the Lightroom built-in camera app? I don't think Lightroom supports HEIC yet, so maybe you import some low res preview in this case. Perhaps you should use the built-in app and shoot in DNG.

Lightroom CC on mobile converts the HEIC files to JPEG when importing from the camera roll. That said, you shouldn't be seeing these artifacts with a photo shot on iPhone X. If you can provide more details on your OS version, version of Lightroom, how you are taking the photo, and the resolution of the photo, we can investigate.

Yes. In Edinburgh, lovely city.

I'm using IOS version 11.2.5 (15D100). Lightroom CC version 3.1.2. Photo info from Lightroom says: iPhone X back dual camera 6mm f2.4, 4032 x 3024 pixels. ISO 16 1/180 sec. For this picture, I just hit the Auto adjust and that's when I saw the artifacts.  This was the worst case, but I see these large blocks of artifacts in many pictures where the sky is particulary flat. I can give you other examples. Here's an example where I just turned the highlights down.

Yeah I’d say try using Lightroom’s camera app to take pictures like that and if you have the space, set it to raw. That will always produce better quality images.

Hi Brian, the dev team is investigating this. It appears that the new auto mechanism is overly aggressive at trying to bring back detail in blown-out highlights (and thus causing the blocks). You can fix this just by reseting the highlight slider in pictures where the sky is blown out. Or as mentioned above, the Lightroom camera app captures HDR which has a much better range for this type of photo.
