Revel: Ability to find duplicate images in library

Feature request:
One great thing about Revel is that it has allowed me to upload photos from the multiple computers on which family members have stored pictures over the years to create a single library.

The bad news (both for me and for whomever manages your server farm) is that it has brought to light the fact that there were versions of the same picture on multiple computers, so my unified library now contains a load of duplicates.

I understand that Revel tries to avoid uploading duplicates by comparing checksums not filenames. Well I certainly have duplicates so I can only assume that my visually identical pictures have different checksums somehow.

So here is my feature request:- Offer the ability Deduplicate pictures through some kind of pixel analysis to suggest duplicates. I bet I'm not the only one with this issue and manually looking for dupes in a 20000 picture library will be a major PITA.

Thanks Adobeites!

Hi Don, I see your reply is 2 years old. I was wondering, is there any progress on this idea for incorporation into Revel or Lightroom?

I'm running into the bad thing that I imported a bunch of files (few hundreds) from iPhone and now a few Albums from iPhoto. So far so good, but quite a few of the pictures are now doubled (I suspect every picture taken with the iPhone). At least some metadata would help in clearing it out (resolution, filesize,...)

I have been looking for 10 minutes in the help menu and I cannot believe the Adobe Revel you have pushed me into using does not have a remove duplicates function.

For how long can I go back to Elements II before that is shut down?

Hello Buke
Revel filters out duplicates based on file byte comparisons (aka. hashing or checksumming). Revel will not filter images that are edited copies of originals.

Revel doesn't look at file names when determining whether images are duplicates, but considers the binary contents of the files. If the file contents are exactly the same, then Revel flags them as duplicates regardless of filename and other properties.
When there are two photos with the same pixel data--but one has some metadata added, or is of a different file format, then images are not considered as being duplicates.
Albums should transfer, though the organizational structure will flatten (Revel doesn't current supported nested albums, aka subfolders)

Elements 11 is not being shut down. You can use this software for as long as you need to. Its just the Photoshop.com storage service that is being discontinued. You can use Elements 11 to upload and download images to Revel.

Please see our FAQ Forum post "How do I upload photos to Revel" http://forums.adobe.com/message/51141...

Thanks
Scott
