LR: Auto Export smart collections to sync mobile devices

I find I spend a fair amount of time trying to keep my iPad photos synced with my Lightroom output, smart collections that aggregate my 5 star images are great but I still have to find time to export those to my iPad folder where they get synced later.

Probably the easiest solution might be a batch export process in Lightroom that I could assign any number of smart collections to, the batch could be set to run on a schedule

Maybe someone else has found a slick solution to this ?

I use Published Smart Folders to harddisk, and have those directories selected for sync in iTunes.

That sounds like exactly the solution! I admit I overlooked the hard drive option of 'Publish'..

Oh, not really, though it saves a couple steps, it looks to me that it still requires me to remember to publish the updates? That is the weak link in my current system,

True, you still have to remember a minimum of what you did :-)

But it's got a few advantages:

  • It only republishes (and therefore syncs with the iPad) only the changed images
  • You're shown if there are any images that need republishing (I always keep the "Published Photos" section collapsed, so I see immediately if there's anything new/changed when clicking through the smart folders)
  • You don't have to remember folders and output settings, once it's set up

When I lock my photos (indicating finished again, for now...), they are automatically republished. This feature presently requires a plugin (ChangeManager), but hopefully Adobe will implement something similar natively one of these days...
