LightRoom: Why isn't there a shortcut key to label images purple?
I cannot understand why Adobe keeps skipping over giving users a shortcut key for the Purple Label.
It just doesn't make sense and is a very annoying niggle to have to keep working around.
Adobe seem more intent on introducing "non core" features to drive sales that deal with the number of inconsistencies that already exist in Lightroom.

I used a workaround before where you add some script to a file, but it gets removed every time that I upgrade to a newer version of Lr!

Keyboard Tamer doesn't know about the Photo > Set Color Label > Purple command, perhaps because internally it doesn't follow the same conventions as the other shortcut keys.

The TranslatedStrings.txt file doesn't actually get deleted when you upgrade to a new version. It's left behind in the application folder for the previous version, and you need to copy it to the application folder for the new version, e.g. from:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.6\Resources\en
to:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4\Resources\en

So if they moved that shortcut to another key, 0 could be used as the shortcut for Purple colour flag. That would be rather logical when 6-9 are already used for the other color flags.

In TranslatedStrings.txt (in with program files / resources):
"$$$/AgLibrary/Menu/Photo/Label/Toggle5Shortcut=Ctrl+9"

Since people have been asking for specific shortcuts and a general facility for many years without any action by Adobe, you might consider the workarounds. These workarounds are far from temporary -- on Windows, you'll need to copy a single file every couple of years when there's a major release, while the Mac workaround remains in place until/if Adobe changes the name of the LR app.
Windows:
- For most shortcuts, you can edit the file TranslatedStrings.txt, as described here: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/shortcuts-dont-work-language-version-non-english-keyboar...f
- Some shortcuts aren't controlled by TranslatedStrings.txt; for these, you can use the widely used and free Autohotkey utility.
Mac:
- For most shortcuts, you can edit the file TranslatedStrings.txt, as described here: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/shortcuts-dont-work-language-version-non-english-keyboar...f
- For any shortcut that appears as a menu item, you can use the Mac's builtin Preferences > Keyword > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts.
- For shortcuts not controlled by TranslatedStrings.txt and not appearing in a menu item, there are third-party keyboard-macro utilities available, but I don't have any specific experience with them.
