Lightroom: Where is the ability to create custom page sizes for Lr Book module?
It's been nine months now since Kevin Tieskoetter was quoted in a blog interview about the new Book module in Lr 4.x ... in which he stated:
"Yes! All of the templates we ship with Lightroom are made using Illustrator, and I'll be documenting the process for creating those. We've also successfully made templates using InDesign and the freeware tool called Scribus, so if you need templates in different sizes, you'll have a range of options."
The full interview can be read here:
http://www.pixiq.com/article/kevin-ti...
Where is this documentation? Why are you holding back? When will this issue be addressed? Why did you design it to be a one-trick pony only supporting a single vendor in the first place? Are you choosing to intentionally force Lr users to seek other options for their book making needs?
Yes, you did offer the ability to export books to pdf or jpeg ... but ... if none of the six book vendors I do use don't use the page sizes available in the Book module ... what good is it? To this point ... the Book module, in it's current state, is just a waste of space on my hard drive and a useless feature I am expected to pay for and not implement because you (and/or the executives in charge) don't think it's important to keep your word and share how to create custom templates and page sizes.
I await your response to this matter ... of course ... if you continue to remain silent on the subject ... that too will speak volumes ...

With the still unfixed book-vanishing-bug and Blurb seemingly washing their hands of Adobe regarding upload/transfer issues this module may be considered as stillborn even by Adobe product management now...
Personally I do not expect anything from the book module any more, until LR5, hopefully completely redesigned then.

Do you contemplate tomredesign the basic concepts of the book module, to achieve flexibility and a more LR-style overall concept, like outlined here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/42068... ?
Because nobody will ever be able to satisfy all tastes for layout, if strictly predefined.
Even with page sizes: how many tablet/slate devices would you accomodate? How many world paper formats?
Can we at least hope for true iPad resolution any minor update soon?

- No custom layouts
- Page sizes are limited (need European standards)
- Blurb's books are no good quality
- Blurb is too expensive for the quality deliverred

Primarily because of lack of custom page sizes.
I could live with the fixed layouts, but the fixed pages sizes are a restriction, which makes the module utterly useless: online print shops use all kind of different paper sizes and mine doesn't offer ANY of the sizes Lightroom forces me to use.

Or should I say BLURB-Module.
I bought LR4 specifically because of its photobook functionality to get away from custom software products by photobook vendors. And now I find myself more or less tied to Blurb by Adobe, but with less flexibility and worse photo book features (e.g. no custom page layouts, very bad handling of text, limitation of page sizes to those offered by Blurb) than even the most cheaply designed software offered by the supermarket around the corner to order photo books via their service.
For months, nothing is moving here. Adobe does not give LR4 users the ability to create custom layouts (as originally promised). And instead of at least releasing a few more templates (e.g. for common European page sizes) themselves: nothing, nothing at all.
I find this so inexcusable for a company like Adobe that its hard for me to find the proper words.

As a business owner who is selling templates for the Print Module, I have to say that I went into my business after the release of LR4, thinking I would start selling Print Module Templates, and that I figured it would make sense that LR5 would start having custom template functionality for the Book Module. This was part of my business plan.
Can you tell me definitively if this is NOT a direction Adobe is going at all for the future of LR? It would probably help in my business development to know if this is not going to be a 50/50 profit center with Print Module Templates.
I am very disappointed if this is the case. I really think this is the best thing that happened to Lightroom...IF it becomes customizable.

With the advent of the policy change to the forced perpetual subscription model to CC for the "creative" apps ... and the total lack of attention to both the Slideshow and Book modules in Lr to make them viable options ... I have moved all my RAW workflow from Lr ... since I have little to no confidence that Adobe has my best interests at heart with their licensing models and future application development for the few apps that they still offer perpetual licensing options ... I refuse to gamble the future of my business aspirations by further supporting Adobe products. If I have to accomplish a two-thirds of my tasks outside of Lr, it has become quite easy to remove the remaining third. While Adobe products may be considered quite powerful tools, I will not allow a single vendor to dictate my concerns. I'm a living breathing human being ... much more than "another layer of revenue," ... I can't treat my clients as some nameless, faceless set of figures on a spreadsheet, I'll not allow Adobe to treat me as such.
I didn't come to this decision lightly or without researching my options. It is troubling that after supporting Adobe in a financial manner for over 20 years that I have to face such a decision. I have been in this business for 38 years. I made a good living before Adobe products were included in my daily workflow, I expect that I will continue on without them in the future.

I'd love to know an alternative RAW workflow. I've been considering moving away from it for awhile. I really only use it to select, organize and tag photos. Editing in it is and always has been a clumsy tool at best. Now with the issues with Mavericks and my second monitor: oy, it's become a massive headache.
But, yeah, the Book module is a bit of a letdown. I completely agree about Blurb. It's fine for consumer use but isn't really pro quality. Then again, LR is mostly a consumer product. And what about printing? I came here to try to figure out how to make a custom paper size in the Print module. I wish there was a plain organizing and tagging app that would allow me to cull the wheat from the chaff. And, no, not Bridge.
