Lightroom: Very slow with Retina 5K iMac

Hello.

Since purchasing a retina 5k iMac I have experinced severe lag when using Lightroom 5. It is update to the latest versions but cropping, viewing images fully screen, and making adjustments with the sliders has considerable lag.

I called up nearly 2 weeks ago and spent 1 hour and 40 minutes (costing me £10) on the phone with someone who promised me a call back from technical support. I am still yet to hear anything.

The experience and support I am getting from Adobe is appalling considering my investment I am extremely disappointed the issue could not be resolved and that no one got back to me as promised.

I post here in the hope the 'service' may be better.

Adobe are aware of the issue (and no doubt working on a solution) but you've bought cutting edge technology and they couldn't know exactly how that would affect Lightroom until they got their hands on one.

Hopefully you won't need to wait too long for a solution, but they don't usually announce what they're working on, so you might not get the reply you want yet.

In the meantime, using a smaller window size would certainly help with the performance issues you're seeing. It's primarily due to the number of pixels being pushed around on a 5k screen.

My issue is also with the fact that this was not mentioned as a potential problem on the phone, and the promise of a callback from tech support which never came, leaving me less than impressed.

Hopefully the problem will be addressed soon and a member of the Adobe team will see my thread and reply.

The Lightroom team is still investigating these issues in MacOS 10.10.
We have documented slowdowns and video driver issues in MacOS 10.10 (and worst on the Retina 5K) for Apple, and are waiting for Apple to solve the OS/driver issues.

Oh, its an Apple fault........what a surprise. Adobe blame Apple, and vice versa. In the mean time, i'll just sit here with £2100 of hardware and software until someone sorts it.

No, Chris didn't say it's only an Apple issue. There are some issues with Yosemite - there was also a problem with the Map module that was solved by a recent Apple update. That doesn't mean Adobe will be sitting on their hands in the meantime though, so don't lose hope. You're unlikely to get an official comment on timing for a fix, but that doesn't mean a thing, honestly.

I'll just sit here and wait whilst Adobe 'investigate this' and they 'wait for Apple to solve the driver/OS issues'. All the while making slow and clunky adjustments to images I can't even zoom in on properly any more. Fantastic.

Yosemite has been around for four months, not to mention the additional time developers get with beta versions, all so this type of failing can be avoided.

Hope is a distant memory at this point. Every other bit of software/app runs absolutely fine. I would be long gone if it weren't for the lack of competitive alternatives, as would many others I suspect.

And the whole problem is wrapped up in no official comments, no timescales on a fix, useless telephone support and a premium monthly payment and initial purchase costs.

Yes, despite the early bug reports filed with Apple, many of the MacOS 10.10 slowdowns and OS bugs are not yet solved - and some of the problems did not even appear until later OS updates. Unfortunately, there is no way for the application developer to work around many of these OS bugs. But we still spend a lot of time working around as many Apple OS bugs as we can. We are working with Apple to try and get these MacOS 10.10 bugs fixed in the OS updates, but we cannot set Apple's schedule or priorities.
In the meantime, we continue to investigate the slowdowns and fix what we can, and document all the OS issues for Apple.

So whilst the sluggish performance is being attributed to the OS, how about the problem zooming in on the image? Any ideas at all on this? I literally only get a 30-40% 1 stage zoom on any image.

Adobe photoshop lightroom is extreme slow on my new retina 5K mac. The slideshow always crash when i press play. I can render the slideshow, but can't play it.

I lost track of how many single threads documenting the horrible performance en pair by imac 5k + Adobe CC I subscribed to, around december I thought I'll give it 3 months, now it's may. Nothing changed, no fixes, just nothing. If a job has to be done fast i'm doing it on a 2012 MacBook Pro 13" with an external display while the imac is sitting next to me, taunting me. Good job everybody at Adobe and Apple. I've never felt so cheated as a professional customer ever before.

Felix, have you tried the GPU setting in the latest Lightroom release. It's built for high resolution monitors.

Hi,
I have similar issue on EL captain. some of pictures have dont load . its fazed out. and navigating thru pictures on full screen in library module spins.. i have latest LR installed.. is any fix coming soon

I have fully upgraded 5k mac ( 40gig ram ) but when I want to import,export or sync setting is very slow!! I did all the already all the tricks to make LR faster but does not work! it seems is something adobe should fix in next update.Anyway I think I will move to Capture one pro 9

3 months ago i bought a brand new imac 5K retina and I'm getting the same problems using photoshop cc.
I looked at the post date and i see that it opened 1 year ago! and they are still "investigating".
I chat with the Adobe customer services and they couldn't find for me any solution only to change the resolution screen and play with some of the settings.
I really can't understand why should i need to downgrade my screen resolution for getting smooth experience??
I must say that i have started to look for other software that can work for me and can handle the top hardware quality that suppose to be.

So far, on several iMac Retina 5Ks, we have not been able to reproduce a slowdown.
We do have reports from several customers that third party RAM added to their iMac caused a slowdown, which went away when that third party RAM was removed.

We have been investigating - but when we can't reproduce the problem, there is not much we can do.   We have found a few OS issues, and Apple has fixed the biggest issues in OS updates -- unfortunately those issues were causing crashes and minor memory leaks, but not large slowdowns.

We'd love to know why your system shows a slowdown that our systems don't show.  But for that we need to know more about your system, and how it differs from the systems shipped by Apple.

As i said before i'm working on iMac retina 5K 27 inch. with OS X El Capitan version 10.11 with processor 3.2Ghz and AMD radeon R9 graphics.

Do you need any more details?

We need to know what is different on your system compared to a clean system shipped by Apple?  Why is your system showing a slowdown that identical machines don't show?

I don't know what is the different. I got the the Mac like this. From day 1 i got slowdown on doing simple things on photoshop..

What utility software have you added that could slow it down (antivirus, font management, etc.)?
Did you install any third party RAM?
There has to be something different about your system compared to most other systems that don't show a slowdown.
