Lightroom: Trashes 1d x images
I have just returned from a trip where I have been photographing seabirds with my new canon 1D X and I have just upgraded to the latest version of lightroom. The dng files generated by lightroom are unusable. It appears to be over sharpening the image by default creating grain like artifacts. Is there any way of modifying what happens to file when it is imported? My first impressions of v4 is that you have gone too far with the "auto" or "we know best" features of the product and taken too much control away from the user. I get good results from using the canon software but it is a nightmare to use for any quantity of images.

And can you provide an example of what you're referring to?

V4.2 and no new updates available according to my copy.
This is a section of a picture of a gull. Note how lightroom has treated the grain in the sky and to my eyes the lightroom image is dull and flat. I haven't made any change to the image other than convert to jpeg.

An acknowledgement that you are still considering this problem would be helpful. My living depends upon photographic software and its ability to speed up my work flow and generate high quality images. Lightroom has been the best option for a long time and I would like to continue using it but clearly the quality of the output with v4 and the 1D X is not up to the standard I have come to expect. I have now had time to look at a range of pictures taken in different conditions and the creation of grain where it doesn't exist is a universal problem not limited to the sea bird photos. If there isn't a fix or it is something which I am doing wrong which can be corrected I will need to start looking for alternatives fairly quickly much as I will be sad to see the demise of lightroom.
Thanks
Keith

In the sample you posted, I understand the inset is the image in Lightroom. Where/how are you viewing the comparison image that isn't Lightroom?
Thanks,
Becky

An aside to Chris Cox - Ignoring your customers is a sure way to admit your product has a major flaw as well as being incredibly rude and annoying.
Keith Regan - now a very annoyed and disillusioned man.
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Lightroom and 1D X - Lightroom creates grain in all 1D x images.

You are correct about the work flow. I do not use any presets in the import. The comparison image is generated by the Canon software Digital Photo Professional. The two images (jpg at 300 dpi) were then combined in photoshop CS3. No modification was made to either image by my intervention other than cropping. Sorry if that was not clear.
The limit on upload size does not help when trying to pass on useful material for you consider. If you would like samples of the original raw files let me know the best way for you to access it.
