Lightroom: Provide a photo viewer which supports viewing face tags outside of Lightroom

Currently, the only persons who can see face tags created in Lr, are those using Lr.  Adobe should provide a free photo viewer, similar to Acrobat document viewer, which allows others to view the face tags assigned in Lr.  Without that, tagging faces is of no use outside of Lr.

I want to eventually produce DVDs of my images to distribute to my extended families.  They need to be able to see who each person is when they view the images.  They also need to be able to conveniently search on the Keyword tags to bring up sub-sets of the images.

I couldn't agree more. Please Adobe I have been searching for a long time for a way to be able to share face tags with others who do not have LR. I have many hundreds of photos in which I have identified faces, which I need to share with others.

If you save the metadata to xmp, the face tagging data is saved into an industry-standard file in readable form. The problem isn't with Lightroom or Adobe - it's that no 3rd party app has chosen to read or interpret that info.

I was guided here by a very professional, informative answer to my moderately snarky question...
Count me into those enthousiastic about supporting the development of 'Outside LR' use of facial tags.
My compliments to the forum reviewers and appreciate the value added to my subscription of the apps.

Done.
Thanks, I'm not too familiar with all of this...

John is correct. Once the face metadata is saved in sidecar XMP or exported as JPEGs to include the face info, the face tags along with the image regions are written in industry standard metadata format (http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org). There is nothing Adobe proprietary in that format.

Note that the Metadata Working Group's Web site has been offline for quite a while now (weeks, at least).

Oh, I thought it was a temporary glitch for me today. Not sure who operates that site. Checking with some folks internally. But this page https://sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/MWG.html contains enough info.

I like the concept of a self contained viewer, but there are a couple of alternatives that might be easier to implement.

1.  Allow the export of the image with name tags in place as either a flat or annotated PDF.  This could be viewed in any PDF viewer with the name information visible.

2. Add face tag viewing to the mobile version of LR.  It would be even better to have full support of face recognition either in the mobile app or a separate face recognition only app.   Just viewing the tags created elsewhere would be a big step forward.
