Lightroom metadata column sorting backwards.

Hi

Strange question here. Never had this problem before. I can't get the order of the metadata order to reverse in the Metadata Column. I would like it to be A-Z in every column. Is this just a simple setting that I'm missing? It's driving me crazy.

See the little three lines at the top right of each column. Click on that to view the menu options for that column.

That doesn't work in this case. Clicking on that only reveals options for adding or removing a column and hierarchical/flat view.

Not all fields allow you to sort Ascending or Descending. It's possible that you had changed the column to Descending, then changed the field to one that doesn't have that sort order menu option. If you change the column to Date, you can change the order again. Or restarting LR may clear it.

You're a genius! Who would think that changing the date column to ascending/descending would effect how the Keywords would be displayed A-Z or Z-A. That totally worked.

There are several oddball and unintuitive interface designs in Lightroom but this one must be the winner for the oddest and most unintuitive   ; )

I only dug into it because of a recent feature request here asking for all columns to be sortable. Before then I'm not sure I'd ever noticed the sort options - I certainly hadn't used them.

Thanks for the extra info John.  I noticed you could sort "some" of the fields but never used the sort.  This is definitely the most hidden feature I have seen in Lr where the sort will stick for a column when changing to a supposedly unsortable column field.

I wouldn't dignify it as a hidden feature, Bob. My guess is that Adobe thought (rightly in my view) that it might be a good idea to allow dates to sort in reverse, and somehow it got enabled for other fields.
