Lightroom: Is it possible to import from multiple CF cards simultaneously to single destination?

I'm trying to import multiple CF cards in Lightroom 3.5 simultaneously. I often shoot with 2-3 bodies and end up with 5-6 CF cards at the end of the night. I can not just do a copy because file names run into each other. I need an ingest feature which renames from multiple CF cards and places into a single folder.

It appears, i cannot select multiple cards to import at a single sitting. Is this correct? Granted a lot of you are probably using Photomechanic. I was using Delkin BackupandBurn until i built this new machine... any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm using Lightroom 3.5 on a Windows 7 machine.

You cannot normally import multiple CF cards from a single launch of the Import Dialog. You can run imports concurrently provided you have multiple CF card readers attached but you will have to run Import for each card.

If you are having trouble with image file names running into one another LR will take care of this by adding a -1, -2 to the file names of overlapping file names. If this is distasteful, consider using a renaming scheme that uses the camera serial number as a renaming token component.

I use RcImporter for multi-card import.

File naming isn't as much an issue as importing at the same time is. I mean, lots of photographers besides wedding photographers shoot 4-5 CF cards per event. How could this be overlooked?

This is already a feature request / 'Idea' - perhaps cast your vote:

Actually, I found a way. I have only tested on Mac but...

In the import dialog do not select the memory cards under the Devices section at the top.

Under Files section you should see each mounted card as a separate system drive.
Open each drive to reveal the DCIM folder within.
Select the DCIM Folder
Shift Select the Next DCIM Folder
Folders from both cards can now be seen in the import window.
Import

I have only tested this on Mac and with only two cards (My reader only has two slots)

Someone with more card reader slots can report if it works for more than two cards.

Update: This works on Windows also with CTRL being the multi-select key instead of Shift

Concurrent Import of multiple cards in Lightroom would be spectacular. Even if the import is slower, it would allow me to start an import going from two or more cards while I do something else. As it is, I have to keep checking back to see when it is complete, or import in Photo Mechanic and then import into Lightroom.

Read two posts up and see if you can replicate this process Victor. If so, you have it now.

I have been using Photo Mechanic, which easily and quickly allows you to import simultaneously from multiple cards and until I found your solution, I thought that was a way in which PM was superior, and LR was sorely lacking. Your solution was elegant and simple and worked perfectly in LR 4, with both a CF card and a new Sony XQD card (both from a Nikon D4) simultaneously . Thank you, Rikk!
