Lightroom: "Edit In..." no longer works consistently in Lightroom 5.4

After the upgrade, I cannot consistently get photos to export to Photoshop CC for editing. It works 20% of the time, and the other 80%, nothing happens. I don't know what factors cause it to work/not work. It does not work for Nik Software either.

Looking for a little more information-
What OS are you running?
What file type are you attempting to use with edit in?
Photoshop is updated to 8.4?
Same 20/80 failures for Nik plugins?
Thanks,
Jeff

OSX 10.9.2
RAW-> 16-bit TIFF
Photoshop is up-to-date
Seems to be the case

It seems to happen when I attempt to edit multiple photos, but I can't find the magic number. Five photos seems to work, but 15 doesn't.

Just so I'm clear, when it fails-
you select a set of photos (say 10) > Select edit in PSCC = nothing happens?
Or do a few photos open then the rest fail to open?
Thanks Again,
Jeff

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Nik Collection plugins would not open after upgrading from LR 5.3 to 5.4.

I had LR 5.3 installed and I downloaded the LR5.4 update this afternoon on my Win 7 64 bit Desktop, and afterwards none of the Nik plugins would open and l got an AppCrash error. I uninstalled my current version of Nik, rebooted and download again from the site and installed the newer version of Nik. This did not fix the problem and I have not found any postings with a fix. I then booted my Win8.1 64 bit Laptop still running LR 5.3 and the Nik Collection works fine as it did on my Desktop prior to the LR upgrade. I think LR 5.4 upgrade broke the Nik plugins.

Do you have a fix.

I did exactly the same (downloaded the LR5.4 update) on my Win 8.1 machine - Nik plugins continue to work flawlessly with 5.4. So at least for Win 8.1. the plugins can't be the issue. Did you maybe install LR 5.4 to a new directory different from LR 5.3?

I always install to the software executable default folder. But I noticed that it did install to a new 5.4 subfolder inside my PF\Adobe folder. It also removed the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.3 folder that used to be there. It also created a new desktop shortcut.
This seems to me to be a full version and not a patch.

I'd try another cycle of removing the plugins, rebooting the computer and installing the Nik collection again. I doubt that the plugins are incompatible with LR 5.4/Win 7. They definitely aren't on Win 8.1, as I wrote. ... No other ideas, I'm afraid ...

Jeff- Exactly. Nothing at all happens. LR doesn't start a progress bar or anything.

When the edit in Photoshop fails what does the activity center show? Is your machine stressed for memory?
Thanks,
Jeff

Actually, the CPU load shoots up. Memory is fine; I've got 24GB, and it stays very low.

And this time, for whatever reason, it did open the files.

Still no luck. Today, nothing is working as far as "edit in" is concerned. I can't get even one photo to open in Photoshop CC or Nik Software. Lightroom isn't even trying.

It seems that "edit in" works with most jpgs, but it is very spotty with NEF files. Some files will open in PS or Nik, but the file next to it won't, even after trying multiple times. I'm imagining that it won't work with groups of files if the group contains a "bad" image. What makes the image "bad" is beyond me. It edits fine in LR, and the disk is in good health.

I am seeing the same thing. RAW/DNG files will not open in Photoshop CC no matter what I try. I have tried opening both NEF and ORF RAW formats. They don't even pop up the dialog box that lets you choose to edit a copy/original. JPG/TIF will pop up the dialog box. If I use "Edit with Lightroom adjustments" they will not open. Editing a copy or the original seems to work fine.

I also tried uninstalling Photoshop CC and falling back to Photoshop CS5 and that works without any issue. So it seems to be the combination of LR 5.4 and PSCC that is causing the issue. I am running OS X 10.9.2

Update: RAW files will open in PSCC as Smart Objects but when I try to save it I get the error in the image.

-From The engineer working on this problem

Could you please let user add below to his config.lua to check if this problem still happens?

EditExternally.OverridePhotoshopPath = "/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app"

If you don't already have a config.lua file here is how you create it-

Make a text file named "config.lua" in the folder containing Lightroom presets. Lightroom must be restarted before any configuration changes will take effect.
Mac OS :
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom

The fastest way to find the location of the config.lua file is use go into Lightroom's preferences dialog, switch to the Presets tab, and click "Show Lightroom Presets Folder". That will reveal the folder in Explorer/Finder. The config.lua file goes at the root of the "Lightroom" folder at this location.

If you can give this a try and let me know the results.

I added the config.lua file and I get the same result. No prompt in LR to select how to edit the file in PS, Photoshop opens but the image never is loaded.

I've sent your results back to the engineer who is working on this. This has been difficult to solve because we have been unable to reproduce it in house.

I dropped off the radar for a bit. I too tried uninstalling Photoshop to no avail, and adding the config.lua file. No luck on that either.
