Lightroom: Configurable embedding of metadata when exporting

When exporting it would be nice if one could configure what kind of metadata that should be embedded. Not just all or nothing. I.e. when exporting to flickr I would like all my exif data to be embedded but not the names as keywords of people in the photos. I tag all my photos with the names of the persons that are in the photo so I can find for example all photos with my son. But when exporting to the internet I rarely want the names to be shown for everyone. It would be nice if one could choose to ignore a complete keyword category i.e. "People".

Jeffrey Friedl's "Metadata-Wrangler" plug-in should do what you want.

Also, in case you did not know, you can exclude certain keywords unconditionally when exporting - uncheck the "Include On Export" box that's brought up when you right click it in keyword list and choose 'Edit Keyword Tag'.

Also, for better and for worse, custom metadata is never exported, so if you want to have more private metadata than just keywords, then custom metadata is an option.

+1 for this idea
but I have a somewhat different concept in mind...not concerning the keywords itself (which can be easily controlled with the 'include on export' switch) but which kind/type of metadata is included on export.
I might want to export an image with all the keywords but strip out all/some of the camera related metadata. This could be configurable via presets - something like the watermark editor - where I can choose which 'categories' of metadata to include on export (i.e. keywords:check - EXIF:uncheck - Caption:check - etc...). This preset could then be selected in the export dialog box just like the watermark.

Have you looked at the Metadata Wrangler plug-in I mentioned above?
http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-good...

If so, what doesn't it do that you need? Based on your message, the plug-in looks like it will do what you want.

yes it does do what I meant.
Now it would be nice if something like this would be integrated in LR4...with the ability to create presets.

Thomas,

Just out of curiosity, do you use metadata wrangler, but still don't like not having its functionality native, or do you not use it, because its a plugin, and you're waiting for native functionality? I mean, it does support presets, so what is lacking?

Thanks,
Rob

Lightroom 4 beta now offers additional metadata minimization options:
Metadata panel – offers more selective minimize embedded metadata options
All metadata
All except camera & camera raw info
Copyright & contact info only
Copyright only
Remove location info (can also remove selected locations by private saved location)
Learn more about it here: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjourn...

while LR4b has improved metadata export somewhat, I am missing the ability to change metadata as part of an export preset. For example, I need to provide specific licensing info and specific formatting of the title field for one client. I should be able to change these fields for each export.
Metadata wrangler doesn't allow me to do this either...

The Lightroom export module has a checkbox called "Minimize Embedded Metada".

(1) This still lets some fields through. I had my name stored in a field and it was not taken out.

(2) I would like finer control over what gets taken out.

(3) I would like to be able to see the result.

With the release of Lightroom 4, the new metadata option during export now have 4 options (copyright only, copyright and contact, all except camera raw info and all).
However, in most cases, I would like to include the copyright, contact and basic camera info (such as shutter speed, aperture, iso, camera model, shooting mode). But, that's just me.
Lightroom are now usually use as the last software editing raw photos. And as such it should include the ability to screen which type of metadata to be included into the photo before publishing client or web.
Hence, more options should be included into the metadata interface.
Option to select (by ticking) of the following groups of metadata should be included:

a) Camera raw information (camera setting, camera model, iso, shutter speed, aperture, etc...)
b) Copyright.
c) Contact information.
d) xmp
e) thumbnail
