What sort of local adjustment? Could it be the radial filter? That has an option to toggle whether the effect applies inside or outside the selection. Not at a machine with LR right now so can't give the name of the option, but it is near the bottom of the panel.

Hi Steve. No, it is all the local adjustment brushes. clone, heal, graduated filter, radial filter and adjustment brush.

And a weird request... what happens if you brush in the middle and then drag the pin?

Cant do this Victoria as no local adjustments can be made in the centre of the photos.
The cursor turns into an arrow in the centre of the photo but adopts the brush you have selected anywhere else in the photo.

Turns into an arrow! That one does ring a bell. We've had this issue before a long time ago, but I'm having trouble finding the post.

Are you using a mouse or a trackpad or a tablet or what?

Ok, when did it last work right? And what's changed since then? I'm thinking things like Wacom driver update. Daft question, but you've tried rebooting?

Here's one I remember: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1115181  Lightroom 4 days!  Back then, restart solved it because it was related to a dialog box.

I seem to remember another one that was related to the secondary window being open but hidden, so make sure the 2nd screen isn't highlighted just above the filmstrip on the left.

Thanks so much for all your help, much appreciated. New problem, my filmstrip has suddenly halved in size and the photos are tiny???? Maybe there's a mouse living in my computer???

Odd. Grab the top of the filmstrip and drag it to resize it.

Have tried this now Victoria, no success. Also just noticed that the star ratings I have given are no longer shown at the bottom of each individual photo and the ones I have black flagged no longer show the black flag on the top of each individual photo in the filmstrip.

That's just because they're too small. You do have to drag the right line though... I've attached a screenshot for you - drag right on that red-arrow line and the cursor will change in the process. Or right-click on that line offers some preset sizes too.
