Lightroom Classic: Virtual Copy in Collections

When generating a virtual copy from within a collection, the copy doesn't appear in the collection but does in the "archive" with the originals.

Lightroom Desktop (Cloud-based) does not support Virtual Copies. Can you verify the version number of Lightroom that you are using to generate this copy?

Sorry, did I indicate the Cloud version?  If I did, I'm referring to the desktop version.

What is your installed Lightroom Version Number?

Hi Rikk:

I have 9.3 installed.  I think this is a glitch rather than that I'm doing something odd.  I've been using LR since its very first introduction.  Are you aware of anywhere that I can specifically report a possible issue?

You posted this in 'Lightroom Desktop (Cloud-based)', hence the confusion. In Lightroom Classic, a virtual copy should only appear in the collection that was selected while you created that copy. It will not appear in any other collection the original image may be in. It will appear in the 'All Photographs' collection (I assume that is what you mean with 'the archive') and in the image folder.

You posted this in 'Lightroom Desktop (Cloud-based)'. That is 'the other Lightroom', hence the confusion. In Lightroom Classic, a virtual copy should only appear in the normal collection that was selected while you created that copy. It will not appear in any other collection the original image may be in. It will appear in the 'All Photographs' collection (I assume that is what you mean with 'the archive') and in the image folder. If you were in a smart collection while you created the copy, then the virtual copy may or may not appear. That depends on the criteria of the smart collection.

Hi Johan:

Actually by "archive" what I meant was the folder on the HD with the originals.  Yes, I'm aware that if I generate a Virtual Copy within a Collection it will only appear there and no other collection,  However, it will also appear in the folder with the originals.

The issue I'm having is that the Virtual Copy that I'm generating while in a collection, isn't appearing there.  I'm sure it's a glitch.

A viirtual copy does not exists as a real image so what did you see in the past on your HD?

Thanks to everyone that's taken the time to offer insights.  I am very familiar with how LIghtroom works, having been using it since its very first version.  The issue was clearly described earlier in this conversation.

I know where virtual copies do and don't appear and this is regarding a glitch and or lag in how long it's taking LR to display the Virtual Copy in the corresponding Collection.

Again, thanks to everyone for piping in and I think we can put this to rest.

BTW, Victoria, thanks for retagging.

One last thing.  Other than here, is there a more appropriate avenue for reporting glitches?

This is the correct place to report bugs. However, I cannot duplicate the behavior you are seeing.

  1. Create Collection
  2. Drop image into collection
  3. Create Virtual Copy
Copy is created in collection.

Are you trying this in a standard or smart collection?

This is a standard collection.  I haven't tried again today, so it may have been an internal OS hickup. I'll let you know if it persists.  Thanks for your time.
