Lightroom Classic: Videos processed with iMovie or QuickTime do not display correctly

In Lightroom Classic version 7.4, videos that have been processed with iMovie 10 or QuickTime do not display correctly in Lightroom.  They import fine, but they display with poor tone (as if one has over brightened them) and poor resolution.

The videos play fine in QuickTime, QuickLook, or when they are uploaded to the cloud somewhere (SmugMug, Picasa, etc.).

This is an issue with two different cameras I have (iPhone and Canon G15), so I do not think it is related to the origin of the videos.  This behavior did not occur with Lightroom Classic CC version 7.3 or earlier.

Robert,

Do you have a small sample movie you could share with us?

Of course! Three questions:
(1) How small a movie is enough? I have a 2 second “accident” movie that shows the phenomenon..or do you need more?

(2) Do you want both the original “straight from the camera” as well as the output from iMovie?

(3) What’s the best way to get the movies to you (Dropbox link, upload directly to you somewhere, etc.)?

Any video that shows is fine - small is faster to transfer.
Send both.
Dropbox or similar - you can send invite to

I have shared three videos via Dropbox.  Please let me know if you do not get them.

The first file is straight out of the iPhone (though the same phenomenon happens with a video shot with a Canon G15.

The second file was the output from iMovie 10.1.9.  Sharing to file, with these settings: Resolution 1080p 60, Quality High, and Compress Better Quality.  No edits were made.

The third file is another output from iMovie, same settings, with a title added, but no other edits.

All three files display fine with QuickLook, with QuickTime, and with VLC version 3.x.  The straight from the camera video displays fine in LR 7.4.  The second and third videos do not.  Notice how bright the videos are when displayed in LR!  Note that in LR the title in the 3rd video is pixelated (seems to display with poor resolution), unlike the quality when viewed in QuickTime or QuickLook.

Thanks for taking a look at this!

I got the videos, Robert. Thank you.  All three look identical on my system when played from within Lightroom Classic CC 7.4 on Mac 10.13.6.

Is your OS up to date?

I checked out the quality of the title and it looks nice and crisp here.

Might be time to reset the preferences and/or do a reinstall.
Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

Thank you for taking a look at this so quickly!  My OS is up to date (10.13.6).

Resetting LR prefs fixed the problem!  Wonderful!

But, in resetting prefs, I lost a lot of stuff, primarily in terms of customization of the interface, location of backups, plugins, presets, etc.

Fortunately, before resetting prefs I made a copy of ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.LightroomClassicCC7.plist so I can get back my old prefs file.

What I am planning to do is to restore the old prefs file and take screenshots of all of the preference screens, and then laboriously manually redo all the prefs.

BUT, I have a question:  Are there any preferences in the preferences.plist file that do NOT have settings that can be seen/changed in Lightroom or Catalog Preferences?  I'd like to know what I may have to lose and can't recover before going through this process of reconstructing my Lightroom configuration.

Thanks again for helping with this.
