Lightroom Classic: Truncates Long Names In Folder Panel

My photo collection is organized via long & descriptive folder names, but even when I expand the Library module's left panel as wide as it will go, you cannot see the full name.  Worse, if you hover over the name in hopes of seeing it via a tooltip, the tooltip is truncated.  Here's a screenshot as an example: https://www.screencast.com/t/DZiugeMgcx

Note that this definitely isn't a limitation with tooltips themselves, as you can actually highlight a photo, expand the *right* panel, go to the metadata section, find the "folder" field, and hover that, which will properly show the full path.  Screenshot: https://www.screencast.com/t/htsYoAvQg

Is there a reason why we should be prevented from expanding the left panel far enough to see our full folder names?  This makes it pretty much impossible to manage my photo collection from within LR, and I'm always forced to go back to Windows Explorer...

(Note, just to preempt a possible response: I know keywords/collections/etc are an alternative method to organize, which wouldn't require long foldernames.  That's beyond the scope of this question. Due to other software I use to navigate my collection remotely, and other non-LR users viewing photos on the same file share, descriptive folder names are necessary).

I'm going to give that answer anyway: even if those long names are necessary for viewing remotely, that does not mean that you could not create a smart collection hierarchy that mirrors your folder structure and has (much) shorter names.

Smart Collections are not an answer to a GUI behavior that I would consider a bug nowadays and that applies to the collections panel as well as to the folders panel in library module. And it applies for the presets panel in development modules too.

Limiting the width of the side panels might had been a good idea when Lightroom was released, but today it’s annoying at best. Personally, I think it is just another sign for neglecting sensible product development, which unfortunately seems to be a specialty of Adobe.

I sync Lightroom Classic with CC and have to come up with ridiculously truncated names for my collections since the nested structure of collections is not synced to CC and long collection names are not properly displayed in Lightroom Classic. In Lightroom Classic itself, I am not able to read full collection names, if I nested one collection set in another. As I said it is annoying.

Additionally, making a smart collection for something which is already properly sorted is not efficient and needs a lot of maintenance from me as a user. I like my software to make my workflows more efficient, not more clumsy and prone to failure.

"Is there a reason why we should be prevented from expanding the left panel far enough to see our full folder names? "

Undocumented shortcut: Hold Opt / Alt while you drag the divider of the left or right panels, and you can make them as wide as you want.

You can also recover a little bit of space in the left margin of the Folder panel by hiding top-level folders: Right-click the folder and do Hide This Parent.  Obviously, this is helpful only if you can get by without seeing that folder; but every little bit helps.

I completely agree that limiting the width of the LHS panel is a great annoyance! I keep ALL my photos in a detailed table structure which can be quite deep. This ensures that even if LR catalogue fails, I will always have the originals in a logical table structure, albeit without enhancements. I have a 5k iMac and there is plenty of screen real estate. It is VERY frustrating to be unable to easily drill down into the tables because the panel is too narrow.

However, I take it all back! The LHS panel DOES expand if it is OPTION-dragged!

Thanks for the tip on Opt/Alt drag. Works for me on Mac. But you all might be interested in this idea for a full Organizational Module: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/module-suggestion-organize

What do you think?
