Lightroom Classic: Slideshow from All Filmstrip Photos does not update with newly added (auto imported) photos

I have a slideshow set up to use "All Filmstrip Photos", so that as new photos are auto-imported, they show up in the slideshow.  This used to work (at least a year ago?).Now as the new images are imported, they just show up as gray thumbnails, and when the slideshow tried to display them, the displayed image is black. If I stop and restart the slideshow, the new images appear normal.
It seems some sort of preview has to be generated before the slideshow begins, now. This did not used to be the case.
Do I perhaps have some setting wrong?  Is this broken?I have tried to change settings to optimize creating previews, and such with the new verions. That *should* not affect slideshow behavior, but does anyone know the correct settings (if there are any) for making this work?
FYI, I am auto-importing JPGs from the folder configured for LR's Auto-Import. Again, the Auto import is working. I see them come in and the slideshow attempts to display them. It's just that the images remain blank until the slideshow is stopped.
Any help would be appreciated.

If the slideshow is in Play mode when the images are imported via the Auto-import, this is expected behavior. Lightroom builds the previews for the slideshow in advance of playing the show and does not have a mechanism for deploying an additional slide mid-show.  This change went in several versions ago.

That is a shame.  For what possible reason would working functionality be removed?
