Lightroom Classic: showing Red Previews and consuming Apple GPU resources

After updating to macOS Big Sur and the latest version of Lightroom CC Classic (10.2 release) last week I started having issues with Lightroom displaying solid RED previews in the library view. In short, I don't think it's a monitor, cable, or GPU issue, and rather a bug in Lightroom where over the course of 1/2 -1 hour Lightroom is maxing out my GPU memory. Switching Use Graphics Processor from Auto to Off and/or restarting Lightroom temporarily resolved the issue.

Once I see the RED previews, other things in my system (IG video stories in a chrome browser) also show RED previews. Is anyone else having issues like this?

With the latest 10.2 version of Lightroom, sometimes image previews in the Library module will just be blank and completely red. The image is fine, I just have to switch to develop or sometimes zoom in. I've even tried regenerating 1:1 previews, but it keeps happening. I've never seen this happen before the latest update. It's not a huge issue but it is annoying when trying to quickly go through a series of images in the Library module.

First, try disabling GPU in the preferences (Preformance). Any better?

If not, recalibrate and build a new ICC profile, the old one might be corrupted.

If you are using software/hardware for this task, be sure the software is set to build a matrix not LUT profile, Version 2 not Version 4 profile.

I am getting the same problem. On a 2019 iMac and latest Big Sur, and have tried the same fixes without success.

If I have Chrome open at the same time it will get the red blocks as well. But ONLY if I'm running LrC at the same time.

I can also get it on the preview pane of “get info” looking at random jpegs.   I’ll try shutting down LRC to see if it still happens elsewhere.  Today I got a giant oink square instead or red.

I am also seeing this same issue in Library - random images show all red on preview, switch to Develop and its fine? - 2019 Mac running latest Big Sur - just like all others here - anyone get an answer yet?

Adding a "me too" here. Started happening a couple of months ago, same things, random images in loupe view, just enough to be infuriating but not enough to be easily reproducible.  Worked with Apple and just got my logic board replaced (the issue was also showing up in Apple Photos, so it wasn't just LR) but after a complete reinstall and rebuild it happened again.  If I move from loupe to develop it will *sometime* go away, but I've also seen it in develop as well.  I did get rid of it by toggling the GPU acceleration off when I had it on the screen, but it seems transient so it's hard to tell.  It definitely has something to do with GPU and GPU acceleration though.

Another symptom that I'm wondering if anyone else has seen.  Sometime the LR app will stutter and all of a sudden there will be ghost windows showing through.  Like the dropshadow of windows behind the app that just the dropshadow is showing through the lightroom screen.

I have a video of it shared here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zkn7cu17n7r5y18/IMG_6323-1.mov?dl=0

In this case it's in Lightroom Desktop and triggered by doing an HDR merge, but I've seen it much worse and in LRC (just haven't been able to catch it).

I get the stuttering too in Classic when I get the red panels. I had it in the grid view in the Library module, very rapid, like the whole window vibrating.

It is intermittent though. It has also occurred in Chrome, which was open at the time it started in LrC. It's NEVER occurred when LrC wasn't in use.

A bit more info here.  I turned off the GPU acceleration, and when I went into a folder I had a lot of red squares.  When I viewed a photo via the space bar to go into loupe view, the image stayed red for a couple of seconds until it finished the 'loading..' and (I assume) a preview was created.

Normally the red squares are transient, but when I went back to grid mode they were still there.  I then selected all and did a generate of standard sized previews, and one by one they disappeared.

Maybe this *is* to do with currupt previews (in my case).  Maybe something in LR is trying to access bad preview data and is messing around with the mac video ... something?

I'm going to try by deleting the previews and starting again from scratch, as this obviously (?) isn't related to the LRC GPU settings.

(yes the app has been restarted since I turned off the GPU).

Ninja Edit: Just got it even with GPU off and working in a folder of brand newly generated 1:1 previews (with old previews file deleted).

I have facing the red screen problem on Ligthroom constantly. My computer has been updated and the GPU changed by Apple but the problem remains. My Lightroom Version 10.3, Camera Raw  13.3, MAC OS BIG SUR, version 11.4. My Graphics card is Radeon Pro 575X 4 GB. I've already turned of the GPU acceleration. Yes, I do experience the same behavior with the option to Use Graphics Processor disabled from Lightroom Classic. Is there anything that Adobe is being done to solve this issue? Also happens with Photoshop sometimes.

This seems to have something to do not only with LR and something to do with the OS generating previews somehow.  Just now with LR NOT open (but photoshop is) I opened an entry from Day One (mac journalling app) with 4 images in it.  Three were the red square, and then the images turned from red to normal images as (I assume) the OS downloaded the images from it's cloud storage or local storage.  Seems like it's something in the "turn a tiny thumbnail into a preview" function built into the OS somehow.

Really really really. … the same thing happens in finder previews using the space bar, in “get info” with jpegs, and using Preview.   And it only began to happen since I upgraded to Big Sur.   I agree that Adobe has an interest in figuring this out, but this is clearly not Adobe specific

I tried to repeat the Day One problem; couldn't. I had Ps or LrC running, but everything was OK in all three applications. But it seems to me that I only get issues once I've used LrC extensively for a while. And again, I've NEVER seen the problem with any other photo in any other application when LrC wasn't running.

Just to add to the commentary, I have been experiencing the same issue on my 2017 iMac, running Big Sur 11.4, 64gb ram, Radeon Pro 580 8Gb, using LR Classic 10.3, Camera Raw 13.3.

The issue is random and get red  previews in both Library and Develop modules. Have tried turning off the use graphic processor option but still had issues. One thing I have noticed is that it is more likely to occur after editing a large number of issue (50-100), although this is not always the case...just seems more frequent when doing this.

Me too with this problem, so piling on. This is an incredibly disruptive problem. Here's my community thread:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-renders-previews-as-solid-red-on-macos/m-p/12175107

A few things

A few things:
- It happens a lot more often when GPU acceleration is set to anything other than "off", but still happens to some extent either way.
- This is a clean LrC installation, on a cleanly installed OS (not upgraded from a previous OS, and not restored from a backup)
- I have yet to see it happen in the Develop module, but it happens all the time in the Library module.
- This problem started for me when I first upgraded to Big Sur. I had other issues so I reformatted the computer and did a clean install hoping that would solve this problem, among the other issues I had been experiencing. The other issues resolved, this one was unaffected and came back immediately.
- Possibly unrelated problem, but it started at the same time and it's hard not to draw a correlation--The edges of the LrC app window flickers and sometimes looks like it's trying to resize the window. When this happens, the previews are about to turn red. Not every time, but often. Similarly if some thing happens quickly, like switching app windows or reloading a safari tab or maximizing some window, at the same time a preview is building, that preview is way more likely to turn red.
- I have seen this issue, or an issue very similar to it, outside of LrC maybe just once or twice, and only for a split second, when using quick look as it's bringing the image up.
Really hoping for a solution to this soon. It's disruptive to a degree that is almost unusable. My very clunky work around is to turn GPU acceleration on and off every time I switch modules. GPU acceleration isn't necessary in the Library module, but absolutely critical in the develop module. It's a really hamfisted solution to software we pay $600 a year to use on a machine that cost $4,000 to buy. 😓
