Is the 9.1 computer running MacOS Catalina?  If so, it's a known issue.  See the support article here - https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/macos-catalina-compatibility.html

Thanks Tom. I wonder how many other full time professional photographers are looking at Capture One as a result of this. I've been a Lightroom user from the get, before that Bridge, and it's so frustrating that this happens with such a common camera and has been problematic for this long. Grrrrrrr.

Using a Macbook pro running catalina 10.15.2, LR 9.41, nikon d850. LR does not detect the camera at all. Now I have to learn (and purchase) to use Capture One, it detected the camera immediately. Dear Adobe, your CC does cost a bit of money, please address this issue so Nikon users don't have to purchase others apps.

That KB doc only says tethering does not work for Canon camera on macOS Catalina. Nikon camera should work.

Yes Simon, the KB says Canon doesn't work at all, but it also mentions a problem and workaround for Nikon tethering - 

Tether does not detect Nikon cameras
Lightroom is not able to detect Nikon cameras when the camera is turned ON after invoking the Start Tether Capture command.

WORKAROUND
First, make sure the camera is turned ON. Then, select File > Tethered Capture > Start Tether Capture.

We are working with Nikon to correct this problem.
That's what I was trying to point John to in case that was his issue.

I tried the workaround, tried a different tethering cable, tried a different dongle. Nothing. Keep in mind it has only stopped working since I updated catalina to 10.15.2, at 10.15.1 it was working perfectly

Could you please connect the Nikon camera with an SD card to the computer and then see if you can view the images in it in the Import window?
If No, this can be a permission issue associated with Catalina 15.2.
If that's the case:
Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
In the Privacy tab, select Security.
Does Lightroom Classic has permission assigned to Photos, Full Disk Access, and Files and Folders?

None of this has worked for me...still.  I have a Nikon d850 and no dice.  Lightroom has all the permissions granted by god himself and still no import or tethering capabilities.  ARRRGHH!  Shouldn't have these issue with as much as I pay for my Creative Cloud subscription.  This should have never been and issue.

Please review https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-tethered-capture-lightroom.html - in particular #10 and make sure that Image Capture isn't grabbing control.
