Lightroom Classic: Mac Crashes (Kernel Panic)

Hi,

I've just updated and find that the program crashes the computer completely... as in full power off restart required.

I have uninstalled 10.1 and reverted to 10.0 and all is well.

I tried the software three times and each time the computer crashed as soon as Develop was selected. The program also ran exceeedingly slowly!

Greetings all,

This thread is reserved for Apple Crashes due to a Kernel Panic while using Lightroom Classic. If you are not seeing a Kernel Panic but rather a GPU issue called out in the Mac crash logs, you should be referencing this thread: https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/lightroom-classic/lightroom-classic-mac-crashes-gpu/5fe4093028ada6796a65854f

We would still like to obtain a complete Kernel Panic Dump from a customer on this thread so that we can work with Apple to get this resolved. If you have a complete log, please post in this thread indicating your willingness to supply it.

Thank for the panic logs. If anyone on this thread has a willingness to try out a test build with a fix, please indicate your interest in this thread.

Thank you for your patience.

After upgrading LRC to the new version v10 on my MacOS Catalina version 10.15.7  I continuously get LR to freeze and crash when I'm editing a photo. Program freezes and then it crashes. I get a message saying my computer has encountered a problem and asking if I want to report it, which I did each time.I restarted my computer after each crash, and opened LR but again and again the same problem.  I tried to find some support but couldn't solve, so I uninstalled v10 and went back to 9.4

It's so frustrating to work this way, and having to do everything again. I hope Adobe finds quickly a solution so I can enjoy the great newbies v10 was bringing!

After a crash, try resetting preferences:

Running LR10 on Big Sur Beta 10, and Catalina 10.15.7.  No freezes, no nothing.  The only issue I’ve seen is that the filmstrip doesn’t always match the preview in Library Mode.

Hi, I have been using lightroom for approx 3 years and have had a problem of it crashing my PC once it goes idle on and off for most of this time.

Since updating to V10 it only has to be idle for a very short time before it freezes and I have to force close or the whole PC freezes and then crashes!

I have disabled my GPU already.

Any help would be appreciated as this is very frustrating

This has been happening to me too. Soooo frustrating. Mine is running super slow and then freezes/crashes, sometimes the entire computer crashes and turns off. I have logged crash reports a few time now. It is taking Forever to get anything done.  😩 Has anyone found a fix?

The same thing is happening to me, too!! SOOOO frustrating when you have deadlines to meet!! I have sent approximately 25 or so crash reports to Apple this week working on two separate projects. I need to resolve this before my next project.

It freezes up almost as soon as I go to work on a photo . . . then I have to wait for the computer to restart which can take another up to 5 minutes or so!! Then to send in the crash report which doesn't send immediately - and REPEAT over again and again - so much time WASTED!! Now off to figure out how to remedy this problem . . .

It looks like there was an 'bug fix' when I logged into LR the other day. I tried what you suggested and it helped a little. I finally made it through that Real Estate job. My next job, I logged into LR and it reloaded - I had to sign in with password.

I noticed briefly something about a 'bug fix' but I closed out the page too fast. I got through that job but it was still acting wonky towards the last several images I was working on. Delayed reaction when moving any slider. At least it wasn't as bad as the last situations.

Has anyone else had the restart/install thing happen?

Lightroom has become unuseable for me, without fail it freezes the only way to get out of it is to turn off the computer. I have tried resetting preferences and that did nothing so I guess I will have to reinstall and hope that works.

@jzj Can you also go to Preferences > Performance and try turning off the graphics processor to see if that stops it crashing please?

And please go to Help menu > System Info to grab us the first block of text so we can see your system.

It was an Apple Crash report, which I ignored the first two times and submitted on the third, with notes stating that.

The Lightroom program simply seemed to Freeze the computer and then the computer crashed bringing up the Apple report.

Adobe should investigate this. A LOT of people I know are having the Kernel Panic issue with LR 10 + Big Sur. It is making it impossible to get any work done.

Had that same issue with a brand new iMac with Big Sur and Lightroom 10. After several talks with both Adobe and Apple I had to send the iMac back to the shop and still wait for a new one. Unfortunately from what I heard the new release 10.1 is causing the same crash.

I have Lightroom Classic 10.1.1 running on a late 2015 iMac using Mac OS 11.1 and the program crashes the computer. And when it doesn't crash it Lightroom is so slow it makes the program unusable. So, basically, all of my 20 years of photos are unaccessible using Lightroom.

Try this next:

A Preference File will survive a Lightroom uninstall/reinstall. Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences.

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

This probably doesn't help but:

I can create this problem on Windows if my phone or tablet is connected to a USB port. It doesn't happen with an external hard drive. Though I don't have to reboot, Lightroom crashes by itself and doesn't affect anything else.

Similar to the other folks on this thread - this is a Kernel failure, it's an apple error. Literally the same error the other person posted about.

11 Messages

 •

The culprit *might* actually be Adobe Creative Cloud app, I've stopped that, and so far haven't had any issues. But given that sometimes failures happen ever 15 minutes, sometimes every 2 hours, I'm not going to say it's definitely that. But given the steps I've taken to troubleshoot - this kernel panic is *definitely* related to something with one of Adobe's products not working with Big Sur.

Any way to fix this?

People who updated to Big Sur TOO SOON: The current version is 11.0.1-TOO SOON! As any IT pro can tell you (and I was one for 25 years), you should WAIT UNTIL like ".2", or 11.2 in this case, for any Mac that you actually have to use.

Onyx note: Onyx for Big Sur is NOT out yet, keep an eye on this page: https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html

When it's out, run it (it's free)! Here's my Onyx/Disk Utility instructions:

In Onyx run almost everything in the Maintenance tab, deselecting things you may not want deleted, like Launch Services. Hit the "Options" button across from "Internet" and check/deselect more stuff like Cookies & Other Site Data, Browser History, Form Values, (which are OFF by default), but make any other choices you want to keep. Don’t know what something is? Google it, or ask me, or don’t run it, then hit Run Tasks. After it's done it will ask for a reboot. You will see you've gained some hard drive space, but try to use it again.

Also try to fix any directory damage by running Disk First Aid from Disk Utility: boot into Recovery Mode, (hold down Command-R when booting). When you're in Recovery Mode go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD (or whatever), and say Repair Disk. When done go to Apple Menu for Startup disk and restart normally.

Greetings,

To those of you on this thread still experiencing crashes, we need additional information from you:

The "Kernel error" which you've shared appears to be partial copy/paste from the panic UI. Can we get a *.panic file from you. This file can be found at  /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

Thanks for your help.

@Rikk The resolution was taking too long. I bought a new Mac and traded the old one in. This isn't an issue on the 16" Mac. Probably something with Adobe being incompatible with 2019 15" MacBook Pro.

Lightroom 10.1. Though I cannot be sure when I updated from 10.0 to 10.1. also, it seems to spike the CPU temps to 160+ degrees just while running.
