Lightroom Classic: Lens profiles for Nikon NEF files aren’t detected

LR is able to detect my lens and automatically apply the profile when it’s an NEF file. However when I use the same lens to shoot JPEGs, it doesn’t detect the profile

Could you please let us know the 'Lens/Camera' you are using ?
Also could you share the sample image with us ?

Hello Sumeet. I’m using a Nikon D4 with a 200-400 ii Nikkor lens. I’ve liasised with Tanuj from Adobe Customer Care who had a look at the NEF and JPEG files I sent him last week and confirmed that this is an existing scenario. He suggested that posting in here might help bring a fix to this

Hi Feroz,

Thanks for sending the NEF file. But i have not received the JPEG file for which the profile is not getting detected.
Also please share your Lightroom version and system information.
Go to Lightroom Help Menu ->System Info..  and copy the details from there.

I'm a bit surprised that an Adobe employee asks you to send the image file. Lens profiles have always been for one particular file type only, so your NEF lens profiles will not be available for jpeg images and vice versa. The reason is that jpeg can have in-camera corrections, so you need separate jpeg lens profiles just to make sure you do not double correct.

That's right Johan. I asked for the file since i wanted to double check if there is anything specific with the user's file.

This is the reply that i got from the team - 

"Lens profiles are generally applicable to raw files only. The main reason is that in-camera JPEGs can have camera-based lens corrections already applied, and applying a profile could result in a double correction. There are some exceptions for cameras that shoot only JPEG or that have no camera-based lens corrections available, but this is not as common."

This has always been the case with Lightroom, at least for the three years I've been using it. The bigger problem is that the lenses you can manually select for jpg files is a limited set of lenses. This makes no sense at all! Just because LR cannot detect lenses for jpgs, does not mean there should be a limited set of lenses you can manually select. I would think that the same lenses are available in jpg or raw even if they are net automatically detected.

All of this is because the lens profile is applied in camera for JPG images. Also LR is based on editing RAW image files so even if the lens profile is not applied by the Nikon camera firmware for JPG images Adobe does not bother testing and making lens profiles for JPG images. And that is for every camera make and model.
