Lightroom Classic: Importing color raw images get auto-converted to black & white (no presets)

Importing color RAW images get auto-converted to BW (no presets). I saw similar posts but none solved my issue.

As you can see from the screenshots the images are fine in my Finder (mac) and also before importing them. Also there are not presets set before importing:

After importing each of the thumbnails they start getting converted to BW (no presets there either):

Even checking history for an image does not show any preset applied:

Even resetting or shift+reset does not work. I have also reset lightroom to default and the same happens.
I tried importing a jpeg image and everything is OK and it is not converted to BW.

Any ideas why this may be happening?

Default settings is my best bet. Go to Develop menu > Set Default Settings > Reset All Default Develop Settings and then try reset.

shift-Reset should reset to Adobe defaults, so it is strange that this does not work either. I noticed that the images are DNG files, but the folder is labelled Fuji, so I assume the raw files were converted to DNG. What software did you use for that? Lightroom? DNG Converter? Something else?

Send one to a colleague with the same LR version to see if it happens to him/her as well. More eyes can be a huge help.

If you want to send one to me, I'll try it here. Use Dropbox or WeTransfer to uploads AT lightroomqueen DOT com

If you have Photoshop installed, launch it and go to Camera Raw by opening a raw file. In the Basic Panel click the hamburger menu (≡) and select Reset Camera Raw Defaults.

Try your import now.  Any change?

There was a similar issue with a Fuji XT 2 user due to a missing Adobe Standard camera profile. When this occurs the top-most alphanumeric named profile is substituted, which may be a B&W profile. The OP is on LR 5 so he needs to check the Calibration panel and post a screenshot of the drop-down camera profile menu.

Hi! its true what you mention. This BW photos have the ACROS profile in Camera callibration.
When i check photos without the issue they have the Adobe calibration. However, copying it and pasting/syncing does not do anything.

Any idea why? The adobe profile is not added to those BW photos.

What camera model was used with the pictures that are 1) Color and for those that are 2) B&W.

Also for the files in B&W what do you see when you click on the Profile selector in the LR 5 Camera Calibration panel as shown below?

Camera mode use Fuji x-e3 for both color and BW.

What i did discover is that for the ones that had the issue with BW they were converted to DNG using DNG converter 10.
I then downloaded DNG converter 11 and the error was gone.

So i think that was the error. Unfortunately the ones converted in Adobe DNG converter 10 cannot be reverted back and I also removed the raw fuji files :(

In the camera calibration for the BW photos i see this only:

You should provide a link one of these DNG files that was converted by DNG 10 and come out B&W so others can take a look.  I am sure the engineers at Adobe would like to see them.

Juliano,

Your screenshot shows you are using an older version of Lightroom. Can you update to 8.2 and see if the problem is still present?
