Lightroom Classic: Image count is grayed out for the upper levels of each folder

I have most of my catalog files on an external drive.  As of tonight, the image count is grayed out for the upper levels of each folder.  I use a year month date folder structure.  The top level 2018 shows a gray 0.  The May level shows a gray 0.  The 180506 level shows the correct number of images.

I also notice that my non-external drives begin with a folder symbol and drive letter  followed by the number of images on the drive.  My external drive lacks this line.

The internal drives are working normally.  I only have this problem on the external drive.

Can you show a screenshot of the folder panel? It sounds like you may have to hide the top folder level, because drives shouldn't show as folders.
