Lightroom Classic Hangs While Moving Files to External HDD Mac OS Big Sur

I've always been told to move files/folders within LR and have never had any issues before. However, today, I've been doing some maintenance on the catalogue which involves moving files from my Macbook's internal SSD to an external HDD where most of the RAW files reside once they've initially been culled/edited. This is a process I've done hundreds of times over the years without issue, as it's a common thing now on MacBooks with SSDs which are never going to be large enough to hold entire catalogues.

However, today, I've had multiple 'hangs' mid-move. So, some files will move as usual, but then progress will just stop indefinitely. The only way to get out of this is to quit the move on the progress indicator/s. However, even after quitting the move, I can't Quit LR. If I Quite out of the program, it appears to backup the catalogue, but won't actually shut down. I have to eventually Force Quit from the OS. Also, it hangs the external HDD, which can't be unmounted and has to be physically pulled from the computer. The last time the Finder also became non-responsive, so this isn't minor stuff.

When going back into LR, it appears as though files are missing from the catalogue.

I'm a bit concerned anyway, but in particular this was moving our Honeymoon pics, so I'm very keen to relocate these and get them back into their proper locations.

Would be grateful if someone could help with this, and locating the files, please.

Could you please go to Help menu > System Info and grab us the top section of text?

Other cases I've come across like this are often a dying hard drive or cable, including on my own system, so I'd recommend ensuring your backups are updated.

Thanks for the heads-up re: drive failure/cable issue. I did run Disk Doctor on it and it came through with no issues, though. I'll try another cable also just in case.

Do you think it's coincidence this is the first time I've moved files/used that external disk since upgrading to Big Sur/LR 10 that it's had a problem?

Is there a procedure to try and find any files which have gone missing during transfer, please?

Thanks again.

Incidentally, I've just noticed that the LR system info above reports my OS as Mac OS 10 (10.16). In fact my Mac is running OS 11.2.2 (20D80) Kernel Version: Darwin 20.3.0).

Just in case the above is relevant.

Is the external drive plugged in directly or via a hub? If it was a Big Sur issue, I'd have expected to hear other reports.

Hmmmm @Rikk any bright ideas on this one?

Not off the top of my head.

In order:

I would consider hardware (you've already done this)

Preferences (because after dismissing progress bars it won't quit)

Clean reinstall would the next troubleshooting option.

After that it is time to get an engineer involved. I haven't seen any recent complaints of this either so I am suspicious of the machine or its installation.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

The external drive is plugged directly into one of the thunderbolt ports, using the apple Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter (the drive is a 2.5" Seagate GoFlex dual FW/USB externals from a few years back, which came with an adapter/cable for each).

@Rikk

Thanks for the suggestions - could I clarify whether you mean troubleshooting LR preferences/install, or Mac OS, please?

Clarification: Lightroom - not the Mac OS

Actually, sorry, but how exactly do I troubleshoot/refresh LR preferences, please?
