Lightroom Classic: File rename with same name as original raw file with different file extension is not possible

Hi,

It is not possible anymore to change a file name of a photo with a different extension to the same name as the original RAW file (keeping the same extension).

Explanation:

The Original File is called: _U6Q2537.CR2 (Canon Raw)

A second exported Tiff File in same catalog folder is called for example: _U6Q2537_copy.TIF

If you want to change the name of the exported filed back from _U6Q2537_copy.TIF to _U6Q2537.TIF then Lightroom will instantly overrule this name to _U6Q2537-2.TIF or _U6Q2537-3.TIF.

It won't accept the same name although it is a different extension (and thus still unique in it's name).

The issue is occurring when you want to change the file name in the Metadata panel under 'File Name'.

This used to be working fine lower than version 10.0.

In case you have chosen from Lightroom to edit in Photoshop and save the file coming back into Lightroom, it will also be saved with the exact same name (when you have set this in the preferences) but with different extension (TIF,PSD, etc). So it is still possible. But not when a file is already existing.

Lightroom Classic version 10.0 (Windows only); In the MacOs Version it works fine.

That happens only IF you have another file in the same folder that has that exact same name.

Use the File Manager for whatever OS you are using to look in that folder to see how many file you have that have the same name, _U6Q2537.TIF.

You may have multiple files using that same name but are Not in the LrC Catalog file.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately the windows folder is exactly the same as the LrC catalog folder (besides de sidecar .xmp files) because I created a separated 'TEST' folder with only two pictures in them.

So there are four files in the windows folder: one camera raw (CR2) file, one TIFF file and two sidecar files.

Please see the folder picture below (sorted by file name).

Each time I want to change the TIF file (TeleCloggy_20081012_023-3.TIF) to TeleCloggy_20081012_023.TIF it will switch between -2 and -3. But it won't change to the original file name although it should because it's staying unique because of the extension.

However your answer triggered me to investigate the issue some more. It was not happening in each folder.

The reason why this is happening is because the TIFF file also has a sidecar .xmp file. Don't ask me how this happened, but that is why the camera raw file cannot be renamed. Because LrC also has to rename the sidecar belonging to the TIFF and that file already exists belonging the camera raw, thus is denied by OS.

See picture below.

Solution: I removed the sidecar (.xmp) file belonging to the TIFF version and restarted LrC otherwise changes were not noticed by LrC.

Of course, therein lies the problem. Let's say you have a file IMG_1234.CR2 and you save XMP data to disk creating IMG_1234.XMP. If you create a second file, say IMG_1234.TIFF whose file type requires saving XMP data in a separate sidecar file that file would require be the same name as the XMP file of the original.

According to Adobe (https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/metadata-basics-actions.html#:~:text=To%20avoid%20file%20corruption%2C%20XMP,location%20specified%20for%20that%20data), Tiff files use external XMP files.

LR doesn't use .xmp sidecars for TIFFs, only for raws and HEIC files. (Dan, I think you misread the article you linked.)

So I think what Glenn is observing is a bug, albeit one that is unlikely to get fixed.

So it's also unclear if there was a bug in LrC some years ago which created .xmp sidecars files next to TIFFs, because I have a lot of them in 2008 next to the TIFFs.

Well I understand the issue now so; it easy to solve for me. I don't loose any metadata deleting the sidecars because it is in the TIFF anyway.

2008 would be LR 1 or 2. It's certainly possible they wrote sidecars for TIFFs. You could edit a couple of those .xmps in a text editor and scan for the software that wrote/modified the .xmps -- other programs use sidecars also.
