Lightroom Classic: Exporting nef to jpg the library does not update

In LR 2017.1 and 2 nef exports to jpgs.  The jpgs do not register in the Library module.  I have to syncronize after export to see the jpgs in the folder or subfolder.  Is there another setting in Preferences that I need to set?

Hi Brian,

There are two ways to update the folder with the recent export you've made. One is the method you're following by synchronizing that folder and in the other you need to set that particular folder containing the NEF files as a "Watched folder" in Lightroom so that it can automatically import the new jpeg exports. Refer https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/import-photos-automatically.html

Hope that helps.

Thanks,

Thank you for your response Akash, but it is in regard to automatically IMPORTING photos to a specific folder.  My concern is in regard to EXPORTING already developed NEF (RAW) photos to a specific folder that would contain only jpgs.  The sequence I use is in LR Export window, I assign a subfolder to export to and name that folder "jpgs-XXXX".  Then I export all of the NEF files to convert to jpgs to that folder.  In Windows Explorer I see that my jpgs-XXXX folder has been populated with the converted photos, but in LR the folder shows zero photos have been imported.  I then have to syncronize the jpgs-XXXX folder and the folder is then populated.  I do not think that I should have to go through this syncronizing step.  LR should see that the jpgs are actually in that folder, especially since I used LR to export to that folder.

Lightroom is not a browser. It needs to import pictures before it sees them. However, in the export dialog there is an option to add exported images to the catalog.

Question I have is, why generate JPGs (to duplicate in the library) when you have the RAW?

Genuinely curious.

I like to have both jpg and RAW.  I don't want to take the time to generate another jpg each time I want one or more.  I also want those jpgs in my Library to take full advantage of LR's search and sorting capabilites.  Even though I save my jpgs, I always save my RAW's in case I want to make additional adjustments to those jpgs.

Are you willing to share your workflow? The whole point of LRs non destructive editing is to avoid duplicates and a messy library. Not nitpicking, just suggesting there are easier workflows.

Neil, My workflow is to import my NEF into LR.  When doing so I import to a new folder (XXXX) specific to the shoot.  With all NEF's in that folder I review and delete the rejects.  I then develop the remaining.  During Develop I can more easily determine if there are additional rejects; thereby bringing the number of NEF's down to the Keepers.  Any of the Developed NEF's that require additional work in PS are then worked on in PS and brought back to LR as a Tiff.  The combined NEF's (except the Tiff'd ones) and the Tiff are exported into a new subfolder labled as "jpgs - XXXX".  So in the end there are two files for each photo, one is a NEF or Tiff (actually the NEF that is used for the Tiff is also kept, but only the Tiff is exported to jpg) and the other is jpg.  In the end I feel my Library and Explorer is not that messy.

In the export dialog box you need to check the Add to Kightroom catalog box.

Thank you very much Paul Grant!  You know, I used to have that box checked and forgot all about it.  I'm not sure, but when I have a new version of LR (changing from 7.1 to 7.2), I believe it becomes unchecked and I have to remember to check it again.  Not sure about this but it makes a good story.

Okay.  Now that Paul Grant helped me how do I register this problem as "Solved"?
